Chapter 1 - The Kitchen Floor

The bright modern kitchen with its sterile gray cabinets felt less like a home and more like an execution chamber. Five-year-old Lily lay sprawled on the cold wooden floor, her long blonde hair tangled and damp with tears, wearing the crumpled pink dress that now bore dark smudges from the grain of the planks. Clara pulled her roughly by a handful of that golden hair, her face twisted in a mask of pure fury. Lily screamed, a high, piercing sound of pure terror that bounced off the quartz countertops and shattered the morning peace.
Mark lunged forward from the doorway, his boots slamming against the floorboards as he shouted, "Stop walking!"
He shoved Clara aside, his tall frame trembling with tension as he scooped the sobbing child into his arms, pressing her face into the fabric of his olive-green button-down shirt. Lily clutched at his blue jeans, burying her face against his chest while her small frame shuddered with aftershocks.
Clara regained her balance, pointing a shaking finger directly at Mark’s face, her voice a jagged blade of venom.
"She threw another tantrum! You have no idea what she did in the hallway!"
Mark tightened his grip on Lily, his jaw clenching so hard a muscle twitched in his stubbled cheek. His voice dropped to a lethal, vibrating register.
"You dragged a five-year-old across the floor! What kind of monster does that to their own child?"
"A mother at her absolute breaking point!" Clara shrieked, stepping closer, her eyes wild with a strange, frantic panic that went far beyond ordinary anger. "She is lying to you, Mark! She always lies!"
Mark shielded Lily’s small ears with his large hand, glaring down at his wife with eyes dark with contempt.
"She is a baby, Clara. You are the one acting insane."
Without warning, Clara’s hand whipped through the air with terrifying speed, her palm cracking hard across Mark’s cheek. The blow knocked Mark sideways, nearly sending him and Lily crashing into the island. Mark stumbled, catching himself on the edge of the counter, his face turning a hard, terrifying shade of white as rage flooded his veins.
Outside, flashing red and blue lights suddenly painted the kitchen windows in frantic hues. Through the clear glass door leading to the backyard, two uniformed police officers could be seen marching up the patio steps, their faces grim and determined.

Mark looked down at Lily in his arms. The little girl lifted her tear-streaked face, staring up at him with eyes far too old for her years, and whispered softly, "Daddy... do you believe me now?"
