Chapter 6 - The Intruder Above

Mark vaulted up the basement stairs three at a time, his boots pounding furiously against the wood, leaving Detective Vance shouting orders behind him. The heavy steel safe downstairs was suddenly forgotten as adrenaline surged through Mark's veins, overriding every rational thought. He burst through the basement door into the laundry room, sprinting down the hallway toward the master bedroom.

"Lily!" Mark roared, his voice cracking with panic. "Lily, where are you?!"

He skidded around the corner into the master bedroom, bracing himself for a nightmare. Instead, he found five-year-old Lily standing frozen in the middle of the carpeted floor, clutching her pink dress tightly, staring up in wide-eyed terror at the walk-in closet.

The heavy sliding mirror doors of the closet were smashed inward, glittering shards of glass scattered across the plush beige carpeting like crushed diamonds. Standing amidst the wreckage was a stranger—a tall, disheveled man wearing a worn leather jacket and muddy boots, frantically tossing designer shoeboxes and folded sweaters out onto the floor.

The man whipped his head around at the sound of Mark’s entry. His eyes were bloodshot, his face gaunt and stubbled, bearing a chilling, unsettling resemblance to Mark’s own features in the mirror.

"Get away from my daughter!" Mark screamed, launching himself across the room before the intruder could react.

Mark tackled the man hard, sending them both crashing into a mahogany bedside table. Lamps shattered, and a framed wedding photo of Mark and Clara hit the floor, the glass splintering directly over their smiling faces. The intruder grunted, throwing a wild, desperate elbow that clipped Mark’s jaw, but Mark refused to let go. He pinned the man to the floor, wrapping his hands around the collar of the leather jacket, ready to beat him senseless.

"Who the hell are you?!" Mark snarled, his fist raised. "What are you doing in my house?!"

"Wait—stop! Look at my face, you idiot!" the intruder choked out, spitting blood onto the carpet as he desperately tried to push Mark away. "I’m not the enemy! Ask your wife where she got the money for this house!"

Before Mark could process the stranger's words, heavy footsteps thundered into the bedroom. Detective Vance and Sarah Jenkins rushed through the broken doorway, their weapons drawn.

"Freeze! Police! Drop your weapons!" Vance shouted, pointing his service pistol directly at the struggling men on the floor.

Mark immediately released his grip, raising his hands in surrender and rolling off the intruder. The stranger lay gasping for air on the carpet, coughing violently, while Lily began to cry softly in the corner of the room.

Detective Vance stepped forward, keeping his gun trained on the stranger as Sarah Jenkins scooped Lily up into her arms, pulling the little girl away from the chaos.

"Mr. Evans, stay back," Vance commanded, kneeling over the intruder and yanking his hands behind his back to snap the steel cuffs into place. "Who is this man, and how did he get past the perimeter police units?"

The intruder spat another drop of blood onto the floor, glaring up at Mark with dark, furious eyes.

"Ask him why Clara had a duplicate of my driver's license in her nightstand," the man wheezed, his voice cracking with exhaustion. "Ask him who the hell he thinks he actually married."
