Chapter 2 - Red And Blue Reflections

The rhythmic pulse of the squad car's lights cast an eerie, alternating crimson and cobalt glow across the pristine white walls of the kitchen. Outside the glass patio door, Officer Miller firmly grasped Clara’s wrist, sliding cold steel handcuffs over her delicate wrists as she shrieked obscenities that were muffled by the double-paned glass. Mark stood frozen near the island, still cradling five-year-old Lily against his chest. The sharp sting of Clara’s slap burned hot on his left cheek, but the physical pain was nothing compared to the ice-cold dread settling deep into his stomach. He looked down at his daughter, whose breathing had slowed to shaky, uneven hitches. Her long blonde hair was still damp with sweat, clinging to her forehead above her wide, frightened eyes.
"She’s gone now, sweetheart," Mark whispered, his voice rough and unsteady as he pressed a gentle kiss to the top of her head. "You’re safe. Nobody is going to hurt you anymore."
Lily didn't answer right away. She slowly turned her head, her gaze locking onto the glass door where Officer Miller was guiding Clara down the wooden steps toward the waiting cruiser. Clara twisted violently, screaming something unintelligible toward the kitchen, her beige dress stained and rumpled. The officers pushed her into the back seat, slamming the heavy door shut with a finality that echoed through the quiet suburban neighborhood.
Mark let out a long, shuddering breath he felt like he had been holding for years. He walked over to the kitchen island, carefully setting Lily down on a barstool before crouching to look her directly in the eye.
"Lily, look at me," he commanded softly, placing his warm hands on her small shoulders. "What did she mean back there? When she said you threw a tantrum... what happened in the hallway before I came downstairs?"
Lily shrank back against the leather cushion of the barstool, her lower lip trembling violently. She pulled the hem of her stained pink dress over her small fingers, refusing to meet his gaze.
"I didn't do anything wrong, Daddy," she whispered, her voice barely audible over the hum of the refrigerator. "I just tried to show her the picture."
"What picture, honey?" Mark asked, keeping his tone as gentle and reassuring as possible.
Before Lily could answer, a heavy knock echoed from the front entryway. Mark stood up abruptly, his boots clicking sharply against the hardwood floor as he walked out of the kitchen and down the short corridor. Through the frosted glass of the front door, the silhouette of a second police officer was clearly visible, along with the taller, broader outline of someone in civilian clothes holding a heavy leather briefcase. Mark unlocked the deadbolt and pulled the door open, his hand still trembling from the adrenaline crash.
"Mr. Evans?" the officer asked, flashing a badge. "I’m Detective Vance. Child Protective Services. We received an urgent call regarding a domestic disturbance and potential child endangerment at this residence."

Mark’s heart hammered against his ribs like a caged bird. He stepped back, gesturing into the house, completely unaware that the worst was yet to come.
