Chapter 1: The Shattered Glass

The grandfather clock in the foyer struck midnight, its deep chime echoing off the vaulted ceilings of the Hawthorne estate. For eight long months, Luca had remained silent in that mahogany wheelchair, bearing the weight of a manufactured illness. Now standing upright, the power dynamic inverted instantly.
Vivian’s hand shook as the syringe slipped from her fingers, shattering against the marble floor. The clear, paralyzing sedative pooled beneath her heels.
"Eight months, Vivian," Luca said, his voice quiet, stripped of the manufactured frailty she had grown accustomed to. "Eight months of carefully counted drops, forged medical records, and closed-door whispers with the board."
Vivian retreated until the mahogany staircase blocked her path. Behind her, the two loyal maids stood rigid, unsure whether to flee or intervene. Little Lily stepped to Luca’s side, her small hand reaching up to clutch his tailored jacket. She was not afraid of the father who had suddenly risen; she was relieved that the nightmare was unraveling.
"You don't understand, Luca," Vivian stammered, smoothing down her teal velvet dress with trembling fingers. "The company was falling apart after the accident. The board... they needed stability. If they knew you were recovering, the wolves would have torn the family enterprise apart."
"You didn't protect the family," Luca answered, stepping past the shattered glass without taking his eyes off her. "You protected your proxy votes."
Lily looked up at Luca, her hazel eyes glistening under the chandelier. "She told me Daddy would never hold my hand to school again."

Luca knelt down on one knee—steady, grounded, and fully present—and gently wiped a tear from his daughter’s cheek. "She was wrong, sweetheart. I’m right here."
