Chapter 9

Back in the private study, Arthur Sterling sat alone in the dim amber light of the desk lamp. The room felt cavernous and cold, stripped of its illusion of invulnerability. The fallen phone still rested on the Persian rug, its screen occasionally flashing with new notifications that Arthur no longer had the energy to read. The weight of sixty years of ambition, ruthless deals, and carefully guarded secrets pressed down on his shoulders with crushing finality.
The heavy mahogany doors creaked open, and Helena stepped back into the room. She did not look triumphant; her expression was calm, almost melancholic, as she surveyed the broken patriarch. The gold glitter on her black dress caught the faint light, a solitary spark in the somber room.
Arthur did not look up immediately. He stared at his hands, calloused from decades of signing documents that had altered the course of hundreds of lives—mostly for the worse.
"She left," Arthur said quietly, his voice raspy and frail. "Julian will wash his hands of her before the hour is out. Our name is mud. Everything I built... gone."
"You didn't build an empire, Arthur," Helena said softly, walking over to the edge of the desk and resting her hand on the polished wood. "You built a trap. And eventually, the door was bound to close on you."
Arthur finally raised his head, his tired eyes meeting hers. There was no anger left in his gaze, only a profound, hollow exhaustion. "What happens to us now, Helena? Do you want to see me in handcuffs? Do you want me to spend my final years in a prison cell?"
Helena looked down at the older man, weighing the years of bitterness she had carried against the reality of his total collapse. Revenge had driven her forward for half a decade, but standing here in the wreckage of his life, she realized that destruction did not bring her father back, nor did it heal the void he had left behind.
"Prison won't fix what you broke, Arthur," Helena said steadily. "Neither will bankruptcy. But you are going to stand up in front of the federal investigators tomorrow morning, and you are going to hand over every remaining asset, every offshore account, and every hidden document. You are going to dismantle the very system you created."

Arthur swallowed hard, the fight entirely drained from him. He gave a slow, defeated nod. "And Victoria?"
"Victoria is finally free of you," Helena replied. "She has a chance to build a real life. Something you and I were never allowed to have."
