Chapter 3

The groom hesitated, his instincts telling him something was profoundly wrong, but generations of deference to Arthur Sterling’s authority won out. He offered a polite nod, turned on his heel, and walked toward the far end of the ballroom to confer with the catering manager. The moment he was out of earshot, the artificial warmth drained entirely from Arthur’s face. He turned back to Helena, his eyes narrowing into cold slits.

"You are playing a very dangerous game," Arthur hissed, stepping closer to Helena despite the social impropriety of the gesture. "Security will escort you out if you don't walk out of those double doors under your own power right now."

Helena held her ground, unintimidated by the man who had terrorized corporate boardrooms for three decades. "Security, Arthur? You want to draw more attention to us? Let the guests see the guards manhandling a guest over a little spilled glitter? Go ahead. Call them. Let's see how long it takes before someone asks where the rest of the family fortune went."

Victoria clutched her hands together, her knuckles turning white against the ivory lace of her gown. The panic that had seized her face moments earlier had now settled into a numb, trembling dread. She looked at her father, her eyes pleading for a solution that no longer existed.

"We need to talk," Victoria whispered, her voice barely audible over the faint murmur of the uneasy crowd behind them. "Father, we can't bully her away this time. She knows. She's known since the audit."

Arthur shot a sharp, warning glare at his daughter, furious that she had nearly cracked in public. "Be quiet, Victoria. You are a Sterling. Act like it."

"I am tired of acting," Victoria shot back, a flash of sudden, desperate rebellion breaking through her fragile composure. She looked directly at Helena, tears finally pooling in the corners of her eyes without spilling over. "What do you want, Helena? Just say it. Do you want the estate? Do you want the company? Name your price and leave us in peace."

Helena sighed softly, a sound devoid of pity. She took a deliberate step forward, invading Victoria’s personal space. The contrast between the pristine white bride and the dark, gold-flecked avenger was striking, a visual metaphor for a reckoning long overdue.

"I don't want your money, Victoria," Helena said quietly, her voice carrying an edge of absolute finality. "I want your honesty. I want everyone in this room to know that the Sterling legacy isn't an empire. It's a house of cards built on stolen ground."

Arthur stepped between them again, his chest heaving. The veneer of control was slipping away, revealing the desperate, aging man beneath the tuxedo. "This ends tonight, Helena. But not here."
