Chapter 6

Outside the heavy mahogany doors of the study, the muffled sounds of the ballroom had shifted from polite conversation to chaotic murmurs. Guests were no longer pretending to enjoy the string quartet; smartphones had begun to buzz in pockets and purses across the room, the digital avalanche of news spreading faster than spilled glitter on a marble floor. Heads turned toward the doors of the private study, and speculative whispers rippled through the elite crowd like wind through dry grass.

Inside the room, the silence was suffocating. Victoria stood frozen, her mind struggling to reconcile the pampered reality she had known for thirty-five years with the harsh truth crashing down around her. She looked at her white lace gown, realizing the fabric was essentially a shroud for a dying legacy.

"What do we do now?" Victoria whispered, directing the question more to the empty space between them than to her father or Helena.

Arthur did not answer. He sat slumped in the leather chair, staring blankly at the dark screen of his fallen phone. The invincible patriarch was gone, replaced by an aging man facing the very real prospect of financial ruin and legal accountability. His silence was an admission of total defeat.

Helena turned her back on them, walking toward the heavy doors. She placed her hand on the brass handle, pausing just before she pushed it open. She looked back over her shoulder one last time, her expression unreadable.

"Start telling the truth, Victoria," Helena advised quietly. "It’s the only asset you have left that isn't counterfeit."

With a gentle push, Helena stepped out of the study and back into the grand ballroom. The moment the door opened, dozens of eyes snapped toward her. The sea of high-society guests parted instinctively, creating a wide path as if she were carrying a contagion. They had seen the news alerts; they knew who she was now. She walked through the center of the room with quiet, unhurried dignity, the faint traces of gold glitter still clinging to the hem of her black and gold gown, marking her path like breadcrumbs of justice.

As the double doors closed behind her, the collective tension in the ballroom broke entirely. Several guests immediately began heading for the exits, unwilling to be associated with the sinking ship of the Sterling name. Others stood in frantic huddles, dialing their financial advisors to pull investments before the market opened on Monday morning. The grand celebration had officially transformed into a corporate wake.
