Chapter 9: The Hidden Camera**

David was released on a temporary conditional bond late that afternoon, strictly forbidden from approaching within five hundred feet of his own home or Eleanor.

He didn't go to a hotel. Instead, he drove straight to his workshop behind his friend Gary’s auto garage. Gary, a burly mechanic with grease-stained hands and a heart of gold, handed David a steaming cup of black coffee.

""What's the play, Dave?"" Gary asked, leaning against a workbench. ""You can't go near the house. The cops are keeping a cruiser parked down the street.""

David pulled out a laptop and a small black transceiver. ""Two years ago, when Sarah started forgetting things and getting dizzy, I thought someone was breaking in or messing with our water heater. I installed three micro-lens security cameras in the house. One in the kitchen molding, one in the hallway, and one inside the grandfather clock facing the living room.""

Gary’s eyes widened. ""Did Eleanor know about them?""

""Nobody knew. I wired them directly into the home’s secondary breaker box, backing up to an encrypted local drive hidden in the basement drywall."" David plugged the transceiver into his laptop, his fingers flying across the keyboard. ""When Eleanor moved in, I forgot they were even running. But the hard drive has been recording continuously for six months.""

The screen flickered. A progress bar appeared: *Connecting to Local Server... 42%... 78%... Connected.*

David began scrubbing through days of footage, speeding through weeks of mundane household routines.

Then, he stopped at a timestamp from three nights prior: *11:42 PM.*

On the screen, Eleanor entered the kitchen in her nightgown. She retrieved a small amber bottle and the brass mortar from beneath a floorboard under the kitchen sink—not the vanity. She carefully crushed two white tablets into a fine powder, mixed it into a mug of warm milk, and stirred it with a silver spoon.

Then, she looked directly toward the hidden camera in the molding—not knowing it was there—and smiled a cold, triumphant smile before walking toward Emma's bedroom.

""Got you,"" David whispered, tears of relief burning his eyes.
