Chapter 11: The Breach**

Thunder cracked overhead as David’s truck skidded onto the rain-slicked asphalt of his suburban street. The police cruiser that was supposed to be guarding the property was gone—diverted by a false emergency call Eleanor had likely orchestrated.

The house sat dark against the stormy sky, only a single dim light glowing from the upstairs master bedroom.

David didn't bother with the front door. He sprinted around to the backyard, grabbed a heavy iron pry bar from his outdoor shed, and smashed the glass patio door.

The security alarm shrieked, its piercing siren echoing through the empty rooms.

David stormed up the staircase three steps at a time, his boots tracking rainwater and shattered glass across the carpet. He kicked open the master bedroom door with a deafening crash.

Eleanor was standing beside the bed, holding an empty glass of water. On the bed, Emma lay curled in a fetal position, her small chest heaving violently, her skin ghostly pale and coated in cold sweat.

""Emma!"" David lunged forward.

Eleanor didn't run. Instead, she reached into her pocket and pulled out a small silver revolver, pointing it directly at David’s chest.

""Step away from her, David,"" Eleanor commanded, her voice steady and chillingly calm despite the wailing alarm. ""You broke into the house, violated the protection order, and attacked me. When the police arrive, they will find you dead, and Emma will have succumbed to her tragic illness. A father’s violent rampage ends in total heartbreak. It’s a very clean headline.""
