Chapter 4: The Silent Ally**

David carefully closed the ledger, relocked the box as best he could, and pocketed one unlabelled amber bottle containing several round white pills. He knew he couldn't simply call 911. Eleanor was the widow of a prominent local judge; her social standing in their suburban town was untouchable, while David was seen as an unstable, grieving blue-collar widower. He needed undeniable clinical proof.

At dawn, David drove to the suburban medical clinic on the edge of town. He bypassed the reception desk and knocked on the office door of Dr. Marcus Reed, Sarah’s former pediatrician and a close family friend who had always voiced subtle doubts about Sarah’s rapid decline.

Marcus, a weary-looking man in his late fifties with greying temples, looked up from his charts. ""David? It’s six in the morning. What's wrong? Is Emma sick?""

David shut the door firmly and set the amber bottle onto the mahogany desk. ""I need this tested immediately. Off the books.""

Marcus frowned, picking up the bottle and examining the unmarked pills. ""Where did you get these?""

""Eleanor’s locked box,"" David said, his voice flat and hollow. ""Emma is losing motor control. She dropped a bowl this morning because her hands were shaking. And Marcus... I found a journal. Eleanor was dosing Sarah for two years before her heart gave out.""

The color drained from Marcus’s face. He set the bottle down, his hands suddenly stiff. ""David... do you realize what you’re alleging? Eleanor Sterling is on the hospital board. If you're wrong—""

""I’m not wrong,"" David interrupted, his eyes burning with desperate intensity. ""Look at me. Look at my eyes. I watched my wife waste away to nothing while her mother fed her 'healing broths.' I won't let her do the same to my little girl. Test the pill, Marcus. Please.""

Marcus stared at the pill, then took a deep breath. ""Give me four hours.""
