Chapter 9: Sanctuary in the Belfry**

The heavy oak doors of St. Jude’s groaned as Julian pushed them open with his shoulder. The cavernous nave was quiet, the scent of old frankincense and burning wax offering an immediate sanctuary from the howling gale outside.

A tall, grey-bearded man in a woolen sweater rushed out from the vestry, holding a lantern high.

“Julian?” Father Thomas gasped, his jaw dropping as he took in the sight of the bloodied, drenched man carrying a semi-conscious woman and a shivering little girl. “Merciful God… what happened to you?”

“Thomas, don’t ask questions,” Julian choked out, collapsing onto the nearest wooden pew as Clara slid gently into his arms. “She has acute pneumonia. I need dry blankets, boiling water, and whatever antibiotics you keep for the shelter. Please.”

Thomas didn’t hesitate. Within minutes, the old priest had built a roaring fire in the hearth of the rectory study. Clara was bundled in three thick woolen quilts, her breathing gradually easing as Thomas administered warm herbal tea and broad-spectrum penicillin from the shelter’s medical kit.

Lily sat by the crackling fireplace, wrapped in an oversized knit sweater that reached past her toes. She held a warm mug of hot cocoa with both hands, her wide hazel eyes watching Julian as he bandaged his cut knuckles.

Julian walked over and knelt beside the little girl. He gently brushed a wet strand of hair from her forehead.

“Are you okay, sweetheart?” he asked softly.

Lily looked into his eyes, then down at the vintage photograph resting on the side table, and finally at his ring.

“Are you my daddy?” she whispered.

Julian’s throat closed up. The raw simplicity of the question shattered whatever emotional armor he had left.

“Yes, Lily,” Julian said, tears spilling freely down his face as he pulled his daughter into his arms. “I’m your daddy. And I’m never going to let anything hurt you again.”
