Chapter 13: The Vigil**

The sterile corridor of St. Michael’s Hospital was quiet save for the rhythmic hum of life-support monitors. Julian sat on a plastic chair outside Room 304, his hands clasped tightly, praying with an intensity he hadn’t felt since he was a boy.
Inside the room, Clara was undergoing intensive respiratory therapy. The federal marshals had provided immediate, top-tier medical transport under full protective custody the moment the warehouse raid concluded.
The door clicked open, and an elderly doctor in green scrubs stepped out, pulling down his surgical mask.
Julian sprang to his feet. “Doctor? How is she?”
The doctor gave a tired, reassuring smile. “The antibiotics have taken hold, Mr. Vance. Her lung inflammation is subsiding, and her vitals are stabilizing rapidly. It was close—another twelve hours in that damp cold and she wouldn't have made it. But she’s strong. She’s awake, and she’s asking for you.”
Julian felt a massive weight lift from his soul, his knees nearly giving out in relief.
He walked into the bright, sun-drenched hospital room. Clara lay on the raised bed, her color returning, the oxygen cannula resting beneath her nose. Sitting on the edge of the mattress was Lily, carefully brushing her mother’s braided hair with a plastic comb, while the repaired teddy bear—its seam newly stitched with clean white thread—sat proudly on the bedside table.
When Clara saw Julian, her face lit up with a smile so luminous it eclipsed every dark memory of the past six years.
“Hey, stranger,” she whispered softly.
Julian walked over, wrapping his arms around both of them, burying his face into their warmth. “Hey yourself.”
“Is it over?” Clara asked, her eyes searching his.

“It’s over,” Julian replied, kissing her forehead, then kissing Lily’s cheek. “No more running. No more hiding. We’re going home.”
