Chapter 1: The Echo in the Cafe**

The steam curled lazily from Julian’s porcelain mug, vanishing into the damp air of the bistro. Outside, autumn rain lashed the glass in erratic, silver sheets. In his weathered hands lay a single scalloped photograph—edges frayed by time, paper softened by grief. Clara’s smile beamed up from the sepia tint, radiant, unburdened, and frozen six years in the past.

Julian closed his eyes, his chest tight with the familiar dull ache. Then, a voice broke the quiet murmur of the café.

“Why do you have my mommy’s picture?”

Julian’s breath seized. He opened his eyes. Standing beside his round wooden table was a little girl, no older than five, wrapped in a faded red wool coat. She held a worn teddy bear tightly to her chest, its stitched eye hanging by a loose thread. But it wasn’t the coat or the toy that stopped Julian’s heart—it was her eyes. Amber-hazel, tilted with an unmistakable warmth, framed by twin braided locks of light-brown hair.

She was Clara’s spitting image.

A single tear cut down Julian’s cheek before he could stop it. His throat tightened, his voice cracking into a ragged whisper.

“Clara…?”

The little girl tilted her head, her round eyes blinking in innocent confusion. “No. I’m Lily. Clara is my mommy. She said she’s resting, but she never lets me touch that picture at home.”

Julian’s hands began to tremble against the polished wood. Six years ago, Clara had vanished into the night after a devastating fire destroyed their family home in Willow Creek. The authorities told him her body had been swept into the river. He had mourned her. He had buried an empty casket.

“Where is your mommy, Lily?” Julian asked, his voice shaking with a desperate mixture of hope and terror.

Lily pointed a small, rain-dampened finger toward the fogged window, overlooking the desolate alley across the street. “Waiting in the old flower shop. But she told me not to talk to strangers… only she said the man in the photo has hair like silver and a ring just like yours.”
