Chapter 7

The quiet hum of the police cruisers idling outside the Vance estate vibrated through the floorboards of the grand hall as the initial wave of investigators secured the perimeter. David Vance sat slumped in a high-backed velvet armchair near the base of the grand staircase, his head in his hands, muttering incoherently about stock options and hostile takeovers. The invincible armor of generational wealth had vanished in less than an hour, replaced by the humiliating reality of handcuffs resting on the mahogany coffee table beside him.

Arthur Sterling, refusing to sit, stood rigidly beside a marble pillar with his arms crossed tightly over his chest. He glared at Julian, who stood near the entrance holding a clean woolen blanket provided by the emergency medical technicians for Maya.

"You helped her do this, Julian," Arthur spat out, his voice venomous. "You were the lead architect of this foundation. Your name is on the damn letterhead right beside mine. When the investigators start tracing where the development funds went, your name will be dragged through the mud right along with ours."

Julian turned his head slowly, fixing Arthur with a gaze so intensely calm that the older man instinctively stepped back. "I designed the community centers, Arthur. I planned the youth programs. I honestly believed we were building places of safety and growth," Julian said, his voice measured and devoid of anger. "What I didn't know—what you and my brother deliberately concealed behind restricted security clearances—was that those very buildings were being used as laundering fronts and holding cells for corporate negligence."

"You were blind because you wanted to be blind!" Arthur snarled. "You liked the galas. You liked the applause. You liked being the philanthropic golden boy."

"You're right," Julian admitted quietly, refusing to deflect the blame. "I was comfortable. I traded vigilance for comfort. That's my sin, Arthur. And I intend to spend the rest of my life paying for it. But unlike you, I'm not going to hide behind a lawyer when the bill comes due."

Across the room, Elena stood speaking with the lead investigator, handing over the physical security logs she had downloaded from the estate’s master terminal before the police arrived. The investigator nodded grimly, noting down file names and timestamps that detailed months of systematic cover-ups, unregistered minors housed in deplorable conditions, and millions of dollars in embezzled charity endowments funneled into offshore accounts controlled by Arthur Sterling and David Vance.

Maya returned from the temporary medical station near the back of the foyer, wrapped snugly in a clean gray blanket. Her face had been gently washed of dirt, revealing soft, pale features and dark, expressive eyes. She walked straight to Julian, quietly slipping her small hand back into his.

"The social worker said we need to go to the hospital just for a quick check-up, Julian," Maya whispered, using his first name for the first time. "Are you coming too?"

Julian knelt down to eye level with her, a gentle, reassuring smile touching the corners of his mouth. "Every step of the way, Maya. I'm not going anywhere."
