Chapter 2

The silence in the grand hall was absolute, save for the faint, monotonous hum of the industrial air conditioning overhead. Elena Vance stood motionless before the heavy metal security bars, her dark red evening dress catching the harsh amber glow of the crystal chandeliers. The blood on her cheek had dried into a dark crust, contrasting sharply with the pale, porcelain perfection of her skin. She did not lower her gaze from the three tuxedo-clad men standing in stunned paralysis upon the grand staircase.

On the third step, Arthur Sterling, the senior managing partner of Sterling & Vance Wealth Management, finally forced his fingers to uncurl from the stem of his champagne glass. A single drop of golden liquid spilled over the rim, shattering silently against the marble stair. Arthur’s mouth parted, but no words came. Beside him, David Vance—Julian’s estranged older brother—clutched the polished wooden handrail so hard his knuckles turned translucent. David’s eyes darted frantically from Elena’s bruised face to the glowing screen of the smartphone still gripped tightly in her right hand.

Behind the barrier, the two security guards shifted imperceptibly. Their training dictated obedience to the men who signed their paychecks, yet the raw authority radiating from Elena made them hesitate. They had watched her walk through the private residential wing, past the panic rooms and the biometric locks, bleeding and battered, yet moving with the cold precision of an executioner. They knew what lay on that phone. They knew why Julian was currently kneeling outside on the lawn with a frightened, dirt-smudged child.

"Open the gate, Arthur," Elena said. Her voice was low, devoid of panic or anger, carrying the flat, terrifying weight of an immutable law.

Arthur swallowed hard, his throat dry. He looked up toward the balcony, where several other wealthy investors and board members whispered urgently in the shadows. None of them dared step forward. The illusion of their untouchable philanthropy, meticulously crafted through charity galas and glossy magazine profiles, was unraveling beneath the harsh lights of their own mansion.

"Elena," Arthur managed to rasp out, his voice cracking slightly on the second syllable. "Let’s not... let’s not be hasty. Whatever happened tonight, whatever misunderstandings have occurred between family members, we can handle this in the boardroom. Not here. Not like this."

Elena tilted her head slightly, the movement accentuating the ugly purple bruise beneath her brow. "This isn't a boardroom dispute, Arthur. This is a crime scene."

She lifted the phone slightly, the camera lens catching the overhead chandelier. The red recording indicator light blinked with rhythmic, merciless persistence. David Vance took a half-step down the stairs, his face twisting into an ugly snarl of desperation. He reached inside his tuxedo jacket, his hand darting toward his breast pocket with a sudden, jerky motion that instantly triggered the guards behind the bars.
