Chapter 9 - The Archway

The sound of heavy tactical boots marching across the foyer floorboards grew louder, accompanied by the low, harsh static of military radios. David stood squarely in the center of the archway leading from the living room into the hallway, his pistol raised and steady, his dark blue shirt stark against the dim, smoke-filled backdrop.
Elena clutched the brass key tightly in her fist, her eyes darting between David’s unwavering back and Clara, who was already leaning heavily on her cane as she moved toward the study entrance.
"Go, Elena!" Clara hissed over her shoulder, her voice cutting through the rising tension. "Every second you waste here makes the sacrifice meaningless!"
Elena turned and bolted toward the small study attached to the living room, her grey trousers rustling as she sprinted across the Persian rug. She dropped to her knees in the center of the room, her fingers frantically searching the edge of the woven wool for the hidden latch of the floor safe.
Back in the living room, the beam of a high-intensity tactical flashlight cut through the smoke, illuminating the archway where David stood.
"Drop the weapon!" a harsh, distorted voice barked from the hallway. "Federal Sector Six directive! Drop the weapon or be terminated!"
David didn't flinch. He tightened his grip on the pistol, his breathing slow and controlled, matching the exact cinematic realism of a trained operative facing the end of the line.
"Tell Commander Vance his ledger is missing," David called back, his voice steady and devoid of fear.
"Stand down, David!" another voice echoed—a woman’s voice this time, sharp and bitterly familiar.
A tall figure stepped out of the smoke into the flashlight beam. It was a woman in a slate-grey tactical vest, her hair pulled back into a tight bun, holding a silenced carbine aimed directly at David’s chest.
David’s eyes widened slightly in genuine shock. He lowered the barrel of his gun by a fraction of an inch.
"Sarah?" David whispered, the name slipping past his lips like a ghost from a past life. "You died in Berlin."
May you like
Sarah smiled coldly behind her tactical mask, her finger resting lightly on the trigger. "Reports of my death were greatly exaggerated, David. Just like your loyalty."
