Chapter 2 - Shadows of the Past

The room fell into a suffocating silence as the glowing light from David’s smartphone illuminated the dark expressions of the three people trapped inside the sunlit living room. Clara lowered her cane just an inch, though her grip remained locked around the polished wood. She stared at the screen, her weathered face betraying a flicker of vindication that quickly dissolved back into cold professional distance.
"That manifest was supposed to be destroyed in Geneva," Clara said, her voice dropping an octave as she stepped closer to the table. "Along with the rest of Sector Four."
Elena stumbled backward, her grey trousers rustling as she collided with the edge of the velvet sofa. She looked from Clara’s stern military bearing to David’s unreadable face. The betrayal in the room was thick enough to suffocate them all.
"Sector Four?" Elena’s voice shook violently, tears finally welling in her eyes. "You told me that was a humanitarian relief operation, David. You swore to me on your father’s grave that it was just food distribution and medical aid!"
David finally looked up, his jaw tightening. He slipped the phone into his trouser pocket, blocking the glowing screen from view.
"People lie when their lives are on the line, Elena," David said coldly. "Just like Clara lied about retiring from active intelligence thirty years ago."
Clara let out a sharp, dry laugh that lacked any real humor. "Retirement is a myth for people who know where the bodies are buried, David. And right now, those bodies are floating right back to the surface."
Clara tapped the heel of her cane against the hardwood floor twice, a rhythmic signal that made David’s shoulders tense visibly.
"The five thousand you just transferred was merely the activation fee," Clara continued, her eyes narrowing as she studied them both. "The real price for keeping the archive sealed is waiting for us in the basement."
Elena shook her head frantically, backing toward the front door. "I am walking out of here right now. I have nothing to do with your covert operations, your stolen files, or your little war games."
"Try the handle, Elena," Clara whispered softly. "I dare you."
May you like
Elena reached behind her, twisting the brass doorknob. It didn't budge. The deadbolt had been thrown from the outside, and a heavy metallic click echoed through the hall.
