Chapter 1 - The First Transfer

The sound of the heavy wooden cane striking the polished mahogany table still echoed in the sunlit living room. Sunlight poured through the large glass windows, illuminating dust motes dancing in the tense air. Clara, wearing her dark green military uniform with the short grey hair clipped sharply, kept her grip steady on the handle. Her eyes remained locked on David, who stood quietly near the white bookshelf, his fingers hovering over his phone screen.
Elena leaned over the opposite side of the table, her beige button-down shirt wrinkled from nervous sweat, her breathing shallow and ragged. She stared at David with absolute disbelief, her face flushed with panic and betrayal.
"You're really just going to stand there?" Elena’s voice cracked, her hands trembling as she gripped the edge of the table. "Look at what she is doing. Are you completely out of your mind, David?"
David didn't look up immediately. He adjusted his dark blue button-down shirt, his expression chillingly impassive.
"I am doing exactly what needs to be done, Elena," David replied, his voice flat and devoid of emotion. "Panicking won't change the audit results or bring back what was lost."
"Audit results?" Elena slammed her palm onto the table, leaning closer to him. "This isn't an audit, David! This is blackmail, plain and simple! She is destroying everything we built in a matter of seconds!"
Clara raised the tip of her cane, pointing it forward with absolute authority. Her posture was ramrod straight, forged from decades of military discipline.
"Transfer the 5,000," Clara commanded, her voice cutting through the room like a cold blade. "You have twenty seconds before the backup servers wipe the entire encrypted hard drive."
David looked down at his phone once more. A soft ping echoed in the quiet room as a notification popped up across the screen. The display flashed in bright green letters: Files Sent.
Elena gasped, her hands flying to her mouth as she stared at the glowing screen in sheer dread.
"What have you just sent her?" Elena whispered, her voice barely audible.
May you like
David slowly turned the phone screen toward them, revealing a classified military manifest that hadn't seen the light of day in twenty years.
