Chapter 8 - The Brass Key

The small brass key dangled from the frayed leather cord in Clara’s weathered palm, catching the dim amber light. The heavy idling engine of the armored transport outside vibrated through the floorboards, a relentless reminder that time had officially run out.

Elena stared at the key as if it were a glowing ember. She took a hesitant step forward, her hands still trembling.

"Open the basement door, Clara," Elena pleaded, her voice cracking with desperation. "Please. We can still make it to the drainage culvert behind the property. We can get out."

Clara looked down at the key, then slowly lifted her gaze to meet Elena’s tear-filled eyes. There was a profound sadness in the older woman's expression, stripped of all the military bravado and stern authority.

"The drainage culvert leads straight to the main highway, Elena," Clara said quietly. "Which is currently blocked off by three tactical units and a dozen men with submachine guns. We wouldn't make it twenty yards."

David reloaded his pistol with a sharp, metallic click, his jaw set. "Then we make a stand right here. We use the fortified walls and the smart-panel override to hold them off until local law enforcement realizes something is wrong."

"Local law enforcement?" Clara let out a dry, humorless chuckle. "David, local law enforcement was bought out by Sector Six before you even graduated from the academy. Nobody is coming to save us."

A sharp, deafening crash echoed from the front hallway. The sound of splintering wood and shattered glass announced that the front patio doors had finally given way under heavy assault. The thick fog began to spill into the foyer, carrying the unmistakable scent of ozone and military-grade smoke.

"They're inside," Elena whispered, her eyes wide with terror as she backed toward the living room table.

Clara didn't hesitate. She stepped forward, tossing the brass key across the mahogany table directly into Elena’s hands.

"Take the key, Elena," Clara commanded, her voice dropping into a fierce whisper. "Open the floor safe beneath the rug in the study. The backup communication device is inside. Send the distress code to the international tribunal."

Elena caught the key, her fingers curling tightly around the cold metal. "What about you and David?"

May you like

"We’re going to buy you thirty seconds," David said, raising his pistol and stepping into the archway of the living room, leveling his sights at the darkened hallway where heavy boots were now marching closer.
