Chapter 8 - The Voice from the Lobby

The scratchy audio from the smart-home intercom system echoed off the high vaulted ceilings of the penthouse, startling everyone in the room. The voice filtering through the speakers was distorted by static, but the underlying tone was unmistakable—urgent, panicked, and demanding immediate entry. It wasn't one of the federal agents, nor was it the building's front desk security. It belonged to Marcus, the family’s high-priced legal counsel whom Julian and Helena had secretly retained to manage their offshore accounts. For the past three hours, Marcus was supposed to be shredding physical evidence at their downtown law firm office. Hearing his voice broadcasted live through the penthouse system meant something had gone catastrophically wrong with their ultimate backup plan.
Julian lifted his head from the marble floor, his eyes wide with a frantic, misplaced glimmer of hope as he looked toward the ceiling speaker.
Julian shouted toward the intercom:
“Marcus! Marcus, is that you? Get up here with the injunction papers! We’re being arrested!”
The static crackled louder, followed by the sound of heavy panting and scuffling footsteps, as if Marcus was running through a concrete parking garage while speaking into a mobile device.
Marcus’s voice rasped through the speaker, breathless and terrified:
“Julian! Don't sign anything! The federal marshals just raided the downtown office... they seized the master trust deed! And... and someone emptied the safety deposit boxes in the Cayman Islands an hour ago!”
Helena froze, the fountain pen slipping from her fingers and rolling across the pristine white tablecloth until it hit the cooling lobster and stopped. She slowly turned her head to stare directly at Clara, her jaw slack with horror.
Helena whispered in sheer disbelief:
“The Cayman accounts... those were encrypted under three layers of proxy names. Nobody outside our bloodline knew the encryption keys!”
Clara looked down at Helena with an expression of supreme, unbothered calm. She slowly pulled a small, sleek flash drive from her pocket and tossed it casually onto the table, right beside the spilled wine and the abandoned fountain pen. The metal casing of the drive caught the harsh chandelier light, gleaming like a tiny beacon of absolute victory.
Clara said softly, her voice dripping with cold satisfaction:
“Family secrets are easy to uncover, Helena, when you hire the same programmers who built your flawed firewalls five years ago.”
The lead investigator picked up the flash drive, slotting it instantly into his encrypted field tablet. A green confirmation checkmark immediately flashed on the screen, verifying the recovery of every stolen dollar and hidden asset.
The investigator nodded firmly:
“That completes the digital trail. Arrest them both.”

Before the federal agents could snap the cuffs onto Helena’s wrists, the apartment's emergency backup generator suddenly failed with a loud pop, plunging the lavish dining room into absolute darkness.
