Chapter 14 - The Figure at the Table

The classical waltz drifted softly from the vintage gramophone, filling the opulent penthouse dining room with a surreal, haunting melody that contrasted sharply with the violent storm raging outside. The figure in the heavy black silk cloak continued to slice the lobster with agonizing slowness, the silver knife scraping gently against the porcelain plate. Clara stood frozen in the threshold of the foyer, her hand gripping the damp letter and the silver flash drive from her brother David. The stranger hadn't turned around, yet the air in the room felt heavy with an unmistakable, suffocating familiarity.

Clara stepped forward onto the polished marble floor, her voice sharp and commanding despite the exhaustion burning in her lungs.

Clara demanded fiercely:

“Turn around and show your face. You’re trespassing on federal property.”

The knife stopped scraping against the plate. The classical music continued to play, its mournful strings echoing off the high vaulted ceilings. Slowly, deliberately, the figure set the silver cutlery down, rested both hands on the edge of the mahogany table, and began to lower the heavy black silk hood. A head of long, pristine silver hair tumbled out over the velvet shoulders, catching the warm light of the chandelier. It wasn't an unknown intruder. It was Helena. But it was a version of Helena Clara had never seen before—her posture completely relaxed, her face devoid of panic, wearing a triumphant, terrifying smile that reached all the way to her cold, calculating eyes.

Helena turned her head slowly, looking directly at Clara with absolute poise.

Helena spoke softly, her tone dripping with calm mockery:

“Did you really think a pair of steel handcuffs and a federal transport van could cage the architect of this empire, my dear Clara?”

Clara stared in utter disbelief, her mind racing back to the subterranean garage.

Clara gasped, stepping back instinctively:

“How... the agents escorted you out! I watched them take you down in the elevator!”

Helena let out a low, musical laugh, lifting her crystal wine glass—filled with fresh, expensive red wine—and taking a slow, deliberate sip.

Helena replied smoothly, her smile widening:

“A body double is a wonderful asset when you own the private security contractor handling your transport. Julian was the sacrifice; I was always the illusion.”

Before Clara could process the horrifying scale of the deception, the heavy oak doors of the penthouse foyer suddenly slammed shut behind her with a deafening crash, and the smart-lock engaged automatically, sealing her inside with the woman she thought she had defeated.
