Chapter 10 - The Mortgage of Vengeance

The revelation hung heavy in the darkened penthouse, heavier even than the steel handcuffs binding Helena’s wrists. The high-end seaside apartment—the very symbol of the Vance family’s untouchable wealth, status, and generational deception—was no longer theirs. It belonged entirely to Clara. The lead investigator signaled to the other agents, and without another word, they escorted Helena and Julian toward the private elevator foyer, their footsteps heavy and defeated against the marble floor. As they passed Clara, Julian didn't even dare to look up from the floor, his spirit completely crushed by the sheer magnitude of his wife’s calculated retaliation.
Helena, however, paused at the threshold of the shattered doorway, her grey hair falling over her face like a dark veil. She turned her head as far as the cuffs allowed, spitting out her final drop of poison before the doors closed for good.
Helena snarled with bitter fury:
“You took the money, you took the apartment, but you’ll never find what we hid in the ocean cove!”
The elevator doors slid shut with a heavy, metallic thud, cutting off Helena’s voice and plunging the dining room back into a tense, quiet stillness. Clara stood alone in the dim light cast by the streetlamps below, staring down at the pristine document in her hand. The mention of the ocean cove wasn't just a bitter parting threat; it was a specific, deliberate reference to a hidden underground boathouse where Julian’s father had secretly stored illegal shipping ledgers decades ago. Clara folded the land registry paper neatly, slipping it back into her beige suit jacket with absolute precision. She walked over to the floor-to-ceiling window, looking out past the crashing waves of the dark sea toward the jagged cliffs of the private cove.
Her phone buzzed quietly in her pocket. It was a secure text message from her private investigator stationed down at the marina.
Clara pulled out her phone and read the brief message aloud to the empty room:
“Scuba team deployed to the ocean cove. We found the steel lockbox submerged beneath the old pier.”

A faint, cold smile touched Clara’s lips, echoing the exact expression Helena had worn at the start of this horrific evening. She turned her back on the lavish, untouched dining table, her mission entering its final, decisive phase. But as she turned toward the private foyer to leave the penthouse forever, a sudden, sharp tapping sound echoed against the thick glass balcony doors behind her. Clara froze, her heart skipping a beat as she slowly turned back toward the pitch-black ocean view.
