Chapter 5: The Digital Vault

The amber light from the desk lamp flickered as a distant thunderclap shook the hotel. Saffron looked down at the documents David had laid out across the coffee table. Each page was covered in columns of numbers, transaction codes, and corporate letterheads bearing the stamp of the Meridian Cultural Foundation.

"I didn't miss anything, David," Saffron said quietly, walking over to the desk and picking up a small, matte-black encrypted flash drive that sat beside the laptop. "Every wire transfer, every fraudulent receipt, every board meeting minute where Mei-Ling explicitly ordered the reallocation of donor funds—it's all right here. Copied, backed up, and synced to three different off-shore servers that update automatically every ten minutes."

David let out a long breath, running a hand through his thinning hair. "If she finds out you have automated syncs, she won't just try to discredit you socially. She’ll cut off every financial lifeline you have. You know how connected Victor is."

Victor was Mei-Ling’s husband, a senior partner at one of the most powerful corporate defense firms in the Midwest. He was a man who operated entirely behind the scenes, rarely attending charity galas, but pulling the strings that kept his wife’s social empire afloat. Whenever Mei-Ling encountered a legal or financial roadblock, Victor was the invisible hand that swept it away—often by burying opponents in mountains of litigation until they surrendered out of sheer exhaustion.

"Victor can't touch what's already in the hands of the federal prosecutor's office," Saffron replied, though a flicker of genuine apprehension crossed her features. "I dropped the initial package off with Agent Miller this afternoon before I went to the gala. Tonight was just my way of letting Mei-Ling know the game was up, so she wouldn't try to pin it on some low-level scapegoat."

David stared at her in horror. "You went to the FBI before the gala? Saffron, are you out of your mind? If Mei-Ling finds out Miller is involved, she'll lock down every asset the foundation touches, and she'll claim you initiated the unauthorized transfers yourself."

Before Saffron could answer, a sharp, rhythmic pounding echoed against the suite door. It wasn't a tentative knock like David's; it was heavy, authoritative, and relentless.

"Saffron! Open this door right now, or I'll have hotel security take the hinges off!" Mei-Ling’s voice pierced through the wood, sharp and venomous.

David froze, his eyes widening in sheer panic as he looked around the room for a place to hide. Saffron stood her ground, her posture stiffening as she looked toward the entrance, realizing that the war had just escalated from the ballroom floor to her own front step.
