Chapter 1: The Breaking Point

The crystal chandelier overhead hummed with a low, expensive vibration, casting fractured amber light across the private ballroom of the Meridian Hotel. Outside, the rain beat a relentless rhythm against the floor-to-ceiling windows, washing away the neon glare of downtown Chicago. Inside, the air was thick with the scent of white gardenias, expensive perfume, and sudden, suffocating tension.
Mei-Ling stood near the edge of the mahogany bar, her dark blue strapless gown catching the dim light like liquid midnight. Her hair was swept up into a meticulous, elaborate updo that defied a single stray strand. A heavy pearl necklace rested against her collarbone, matching the teardrop pearls pinned to her earlobes. Her expression was a masterclass in aggressive defense, her eyes narrowed into sharp, calculating slits. She stepped forward, her heels clicking crisply against the imported Italian tile, and pointed a manicured finger directly at the center of the room.
"Banyak orang nggak di-bully, cuma kamu doang," Mei-Ling hissed, her voice cutting through the ambient murmur of the elite gathering with ruthless precision. She did not raise her voice to a vulgar shout, but the low register of her tone carried an icy weight that made the surrounding guests pull back instinctively.
A few feet away stood Saffron, her long black hair clinging to her damp shoulders. Saffron wore a sleek black wrap dress secured at the waist by a heavy gold zipper and a matching gold belt. But the elegance of the designer outfit was jarringly compromised. A thick, pale smear of white cake cream covered the left side of Saffron’s face, dripping down her jawline and staining the collar of her dress. She turned her head slightly, her gaze cold and unblinking, refusing to cower beneath Mei-Ling’s public humiliation.
Mei-Ling’s hand sliced through the air with assertive finality. "Kamu juga introspeksi diri dong!" she demanded, her jaw tightening as micro-expressions of pure contempt rippled across her face. She took another aggressive step forward, her chest rising and falling with controlled breaths. "Dia nantangin kalian tuh!" she yelled off-camera, attempting to rally the silent onlookers who watched the drama unfold from the safety of the shadows.

Before Mei-Ling could lunge further, a blur of white silk intercepted her path. Clara, dressed in a pristine white long-sleeved dress with her hair pulled back into a simple, severe ponytail, stepped forward with startling speed. With a firm, unyielding grip, Clara grabbed Mei-Ling’s bare arm, halting her advance dead in her tracks.
Mei-Ling gasped, twisting violently in Clara's grasp. She tried to yank her arm free, her face contorting into an annoyed, defensive grimace as she glared at her friend. "Lepasin aku!" Mei-Ling snapped, her voice trembling with suppressed fury as she struggled against the restraint, setting the stage for a reckoning that none of them could escape.
