Chapter 2: Shifting Loyalties

The sudden commotion froze the lingering guests in their tracks. Crystal flutes halted midway to lips, and whispered conversations evaporated into the heavy ballroom air. Clara maintained her iron grip on Mei-Ling’s arm, her fingers pressing firmly into the cool silk of the blue dress. She could feel the rapid pulse beneath Mei-Ling’s skin, a frantic rhythm that betrayed the older woman’s outward veneer of absolute control.

"Calm down, Mei," Clara murmured, her voice pitched low so only the two of them could hear. Her eyes darted briefly toward Saffron, who stood motionless beneath the harsh glare of the overhead spotlights, the cake cream still starkly visible against her olive skin. "You are making a spectacle of yourself, and the board members are watching from the terrace."

Mei-Ling wrenched her arm away with a sharp jerk, smoothing the front of her dark blue gown with an aggressive flick of her wrist. She shot a venomous glare at Clara, her pearl earrings swinging with the abrupt movement. "Letting her stand there and mock us with her silence is what's making a spectacle, Clara. You saw what she submitted to the audit committee. She tried to sink us all."

Saffron finally shifted her weight, lifting a hand to wipe a smudge of the sweet vanilla frosting from her cheek with the back of her wrist. The gesture was slow, almost theatrical in its deliberate calmness. She looked at Mei-Ling not with fear, but with a chilling, analytical curiosity.

"I submitted the truth, Mei-Ling," Saffron said, her voice steady and entirely devoid of the defensive panic that characterized Mei-Ling’s outburst. "The foundation funds didn't simply vanish. They were redirected. And since your name happens to top the signature line on the third-quarter transfer requests, I figured the board deserved to know before the federal investigators showed up at the annual gala."

A murmur rippled through the gathered crowd. The word federal hung in the air like a physical contaminant. Mei-Ling took a sharp breath, her face flushing beneath her careful makeup. She opened her mouth to retort, but the sudden chiming of the grand grandfather clock near the entrance silenced the room once more.

Clara stepped between them, her white dress serving as a neutral barrier in the escalating war. She looked at Saffron with a complex mixture of exhaustion and lingering affection. "This isn't the place, Saffron. We can go upstairs to the private suites, review the documents properly, and settle this like adults without destroying the charity's reputation."

"There is nothing to review upstairs," Saffron replied, turning her back on them with calculated indifference. "The documents are already in the hands of the authorities. The cake was just a little welcoming gift from your friends to remind me how things used to work around here."
