Chapter 15: The Frost on the Glass

Winter arrived in Chicago with a sudden, biting chill that froze the puddles along the sidewalk into sheets of clear, brittle ice. Inside the newly renovated offices of the Meridian Educational Trust, the atmosphere was warm, orderly, and entirely transparent.

Saffron sat at her desk by the window, reviewing the quarterly compliance reports that now required dual signatures from both internal auditors and external state regulators. The heavy gold zipper and gold belt of her old wrap dress were long gone, replaced by the comfortable simplicity of a wool cardigan and a silver pendant necklace.

The transition had been difficult, filled with months of grueling depositions, forensic accounting, and public rebuilding. But the foundation had survived, emerging leaner, cleaner, and genuinely dedicated to the students it was founded to serve. The scandal had left scars, but those scars served as a permanent reminder of the cost of compromise.

There were no more dark blue gowns, no more elaborate updo hairstyles designed to project an untouchable image, and no more flying pastries in private ballrooms. There was only the quiet, steady hum of honest work being done behind closed doors.

Saffron stood up from her desk and walked over to the window, pressing her palm briefly against the cool glass. Outside, the first snowflakes of the season were beginning to drift down from the gray sky, settling softly over the bustling streets below. She watched them fall for a long moment, her reflection clear and unblemished in the pane.

The past was a locked door, its lessons sealed into the official records of federal archives and court transcripts. The future was unwritten, waiting on the other side of the glass, clear and untainted by the ghosts of yesterday. She turned back toward her desk as the office door opened, greeting the morning with a steady step and a quiet, unshakeable peace.
