CHAPTER 7: AN UNEXPECTED ALLY IN THE ALLEY

The tires of a battered red pickup truck squealed as it drifted sideways across the entrance of the loading bay, cutting off the black luxury sedan's escape route. The driver’s side door flew open before the truck had even fully stopped, and a tall man in a faded canvas jacket stepped out into the glare of the headlights. His face was weathered, his jaw set with quiet determination. It was Marcus, Clara’s older brother and a former investigative journalist who had spent years uncovering municipal corruption before being pushed out of the mainstream press by powerful political donors.

Elena Vance paused, her cold composure faltering for a fraction of a second as she surveyed the newcomer. "And who is this?" she sneered, adjusting her black blazer. "A peasant rebellion in a parking garage? How utterly tedious."

Marcus ignored Elena completely, his eyes locking onto Clara and the two terrified children hiding behind the recycling dumpster. "Clara! Get them in the truck, now!" he shouted over the roar of the idling engines.

Clara didn't hesitate. She grabbed Leo and Lily by their hands, pulling them out from behind the dumpster and sprinting across the open concrete toward the passenger side of the red pickup. Elena moved with surprising speed, lunging forward to grab Lily by the green velvet dress, but Marcus was already there. He intercepted Elena with a firm, blocking arm, stepping squarely between the powerful socialite and the frightened child.

"Touch her again, and you'll deal with me," Marcus said, his voice low, steady, and entirely devoid of fear.

Elena pulled her arm back as if burned, her face twisting in pure rage. "You are committing a felony. Those children are under my legal guardianship. I will ruin you, your sister, and every generation of your family before the sun comes up tomorrow!"

"Your guardianship ends right here," Marcus retorted sharply, opening the truck door for Clara and the kids. "I’ve spent the last three years digging into the Vance Trust. I know about the offshore accounts, the forged adoption documents, and the medical reports your high-priced lawyers managed to bury. We aren't running away anymore, Elena. We're going public."

The color drained slightly from Elena’s sharp features, though she quickly masked her shock with a haughty glare. She realized that Marcus wasn't just a random bystander; he was dangerous because he possessed something she couldn't easily buy off—verifiable truth.

"You have nothing," Elena hissed, though her voice lacked its earlier absolute certainty. "Empty threats from a washed-up hack."

"Get in the truck, Clara!" Marcus yelled, slamming the passenger door shut as Clara and the children scrambled inside. He vaulted back into the driver's seat, threw the gearshift into reverse, and punched the gas pedal. The red pickup roared backward, clearing the black sedan with inches to spare, before tearing up the concrete ramp and disappearing into the rainy night streets of the city.
