CHAPTER 5: THE FREIGHT LIFT DESCENT

The metal gate of the vintage freight lift screeched in protest as Clara pulled it shut, the sound echoing loudly in the narrow shaft. She jammed the rusted iron latch downward until it clicked into place, locking them inside the wire-mesh enclosure. Above them, the indicator arrow pointed stubbornly upward, frozen in time. Clara reached out and pressed the heavy brass button labeled B-Loading Bay. With a sudden, jarring shudder, the cables overhead groaned to life, and the heavy iron box began its slow, downward crawl into the subterranean depths of the Grand Meridian Hotel.
Inside the cramped space, the air smelled of stale grease and old iron. Leo stood pressed against the back corner, his eyes fixed on the moving mesh walls as they passed successive concrete floors in a blur of grey shadows. Lily held tightly to Clara’s shimmering gown, her small body shivering despite the relative warmth of the utility shaft. The chaotic noise of the banquet hall above had completely vanished, replaced by the rhythmic mechanical grinding of the elevator motor.
"Are you sure she won't find us down there, Clara?" Lily asked softly, her voice trembling in the enclosed space.
"I’m sure," Clara lied gently, trying to keep her tone reassuring while her own heart hammered against her ribs. She knew Elena Vance commanded a network of influence that extended far beyond the walls of the ballroom. Security guards, hotel managers, and local authorities often looked the other way when powerful people exercised their authority. If Elena discovered they were using the service infrastructure, she would likely have every exit sealed within minutes.
Clara crouched down to eye level with Lily, brushing a stray lock of blonde hair behind the little girl's ear. "Once we reach the loading bay, we aren't going to wait around. My car is an old blue sedan parked in slot forty-two. We are going to get inside, lock the doors, and drive straight to the precinct. No hesitation."
Leo frowned, crossing his arms over his dark jacket. "The police? Elena knows the chief of police. She sits on the city council advisory board. Last time a neighbor tried to report the yelling coming from our house, the police came, spoke with Elena in the study for ten minutes, and left with a smile. Nothing happened to her."

The weight of Leo’s words hung heavily in the confined elevator car. Clara realized with a jolt of panic that standard channels might not protect them. If the legal system was compromised by Elena’s immense wealth and social standing, handing the children over to local authorities could end up throwing them right back into the lion's den. Clara needed a better plan—someone she trusted implicitly who operated outside the corrupt circles of high-society patronage.
With a final, teeth-rattling thud, the freight lift ground to a halt. The floor indicator hit B, and the rusty cable mechanism sighed to a stop.
