CHAPTER 2: ECHOES ACROSS THE CRYSTAL FLOOR

The metallic clatter of the food service cart faded into a heavy, suffocating silence as the echoes of Lily’s screams died against the high vaulted ceiling of the Grand Meridian ballroom. Elena Vance adjusted the lapel of her black blazer with chilling composure, as if she had merely corrected a misplaced folder in a boardroom rather than assaulted a child in public. She kept her fingers clamped firmly around Lily’s upper arm, her nails pressing deep enough through the green velvet fabric to leave pale indentations. Leo pushed himself off the stainless-steel cart, rubbing his bruised shoulder, his eyes darting toward the exit routes mapped out in his frantic, frightened mind. He refused to look away, locking his gaze onto Elena with a defiance that seemed to infuriate the older woman even more.

Nearby, the waitress in the shimmering light-colored evening gown remained frozen by the scattered hors d'oeuvres, her breathing shallow. Her name was Clara, and tonight was supposed to be her final shift before leaving the city for a fresh start. Instead, she found herself staring at the undeniable evidence of cruelty hiding behind the glittering facade of the Vance family name. Clara took a slow, deliberate step forward, her instincts overriding the strict hotel policy of ignoring guest disturbances. She knew the Vance name commanded fear and deep financial leverage in this city, but the image of those bruised legs beneath the green dress burned behind her eyelids.

"Is everything alright here, madam?" Clara asked, her voice trembling slightly despite her best efforts to sound professional.

Elena turned her head slowly, fixing Clara with a stare so cold it felt like a physical blow. The sharp features of Elena's face tightened into an expression of aristocratic disdain. "This is a private family matter, young lady," Elena replied, her tone dropping into a dangerous, measured register. "Mind your station, or you will find yourself jobless before the night concludes."

Leo seized the split second of distraction. With a burst of desperate adrenaline, he lunged forward, slamming his shoulder into Elena’s side to break her grip on his sister. The sudden impact threw Elena off balance, forcing her to release Lily’s arm.

"Run, Lily! Run!" Leo yelled, grabbing his sister's hand.

The two children bolted toward the service corridors behind the banquet hall, their small footsteps echoing against the marble floor. Elena stumbled, recovering instantly with a furious glint in her dark eyes. She straightened her jacket, ignoring the whispering crowd, and set off in swift, silent pursuit. Clara didn't hesitate. Leaving her fallen tray on the floor, she slipped through the side exit to intercept the children before Elena could close the distance.
