CHAPTER 4: WHISPERS IN THE LAUNDRY ROOM

The hum of the industrial washing machines filled the cramped laundry sorting room with a low, vibrating drone that muffled any lingering sounds from the hallway. Clara kept her back pressed against the heavy wooden door, her eyes darting between Leo and Lily. The harsh fluorescent overhead light cast deep shadows beneath the children's eyes, revealing the exhaustion of children forced to grow up in the crosshairs of constant psychological terror.

Lily clutched the green velvet skirt in her small fists, her breathing beginning to steady under Clara's calming presence. "She said if we told anyone, she would send us away to the dark place," Lily whispered, her voice barely audible over the machinery. "The place where nobody remembers your name."

Leo stepped protectively in front of his sister, his small chest heaving. "She owns half the real estate in this city, and everyone is afraid of her money. Our real parents died in an accident two years ago, and Elena stepped in as our trustee. At first, it seemed like a blessing. But inside the house, behind closed doors, she’s a monster. Every mistake is punished. Every tear is a crime."

Clara listened, a cold knot tightening in her stomach. She had read about Elena Vance in the financial sections of the morning papers—a titan of industry, a philanthropist of the arts, a woman praised for her iron will and sharp intellect. None of the glossy magazine profiles mentioned the terror etched into these children's faces or the raw bruises hidden beneath delicate party dresses. Clara reached into her pocket and pulled out a small, clean linen napkin, gently dabbing the sweat and dust from Leo’s forehead.

"You were very brave out there, Leo," Clara said, her voice steady and deliberate. "Protecting your sister takes incredible strength. But we cannot stay in this room. Elena has security guards stationed at every exit of this hotel. If we walk out the front doors, her men will grab you before you reach the street."

"Then how do we get out?" Leo asked, his defiance momentarily giving way to practical panic. "She watches everything we do. She tracks our tutors, our schedules, even our phone calls."

Clara thought quickly. Working banquets at the Grand Meridian for three years meant she knew the building's anatomy better than most managers. She knew about the old service elevator at the end of the laundry chute corridor—an antiquated freight lift used decades ago before the hotel was renovated into a five-star luxury destination. It bypassed the security desks and dropped straight down into the underground parking bays near the delivery docks.

"There’s an old freight lift," Clara said, grabbing Leo by the shoulder to ensure he understood the plan. "It’s off the books. If we can reach it, we can get down to the alley where my car is parked. We need to go right now, before she realizes we doubled back."

Lily nodded bravely, wiping her eyes with the back of her sleeve. The trio slipped out of the laundry room into the dim, quiet corridor, their footsteps light and cautious as they navigated the labyrinth of the hotel's hidden underbelly.
