While the children healed by the water, Sarah Vance and a team of forensic accountants finalized the civil evidentiary dossier against Vanessa Sterling and her father’s legal firm in Washington.
On a rainy Tuesday in January, Sarah arrived in Beaufort with three thick legal binders.
Daniel and Sarah sat at the cedar dining table while the children were at the village schoolhouse.
"It was never just an abusive temperament, Daniel," Sarah said, opening the audit schedules. "It was a premeditated financial maneuver."
The documents laid bare a staggering conspiracy:
* Vanessa had accumulated over $1.8 million in personal debts from speculative derivatives trading in offshore accounts.
* Working with a corrupt trust attorney in Richmond, she had drafted an amendment to Daniel’s irrevocable family trust, seeking to be named primary fiduciary guardian with discretionary distribution authority over the children's $40 million maternal inheritance in the event of Daniel’s incapacity or death.
* The physical intimidation of Lily and Leo was designed to establish a paper trail of "behavioral instability," providing grounds to place both children in private therapeutic boarding institutions in Switzerland upon marriage.
Daniel stared at the spreadsheets, a cold rage settling into the marrow of his bones.
"She wanted to institutionalize my children to loot Clara’s trust," Daniel said, the realization tasting like ash.
"She underestimated two things, Daniel," Sarah said. "She underestimated Leo’s courage on that balcony, and she forgot that when a father wakes up, there is no corner of the earth where a predator can hide from the law."
