Chapter 3: The Mask Cracks

By 8:00 PM, Daniel had returned to the Middleburg estate accompanied by his corporate legal counsel, Sarah Vance, and two armed off-duty county deputies.

Vanessa was sitting in the formal library, wearing a cashmere sweater, sipping sparkling water, surrounded by her private defense attorney, Bradley Croft.

"Daniel, this is an absurd overreaction to a tragic accident," Croft began, opening a leather legal folio. "Vanessa was acting in loco parentis. Children at that age are notoriously clumsy. If you attempt to cancel the pending partnership agreement between Vance Enterprises and the Sterling Group, we will file for breach of contract and defamation."

Daniel didn't sit down. He gestured to Sarah, who inserted a flash drive into the library’s wall-mounted 4K display.

"Three months ago," Daniel said calmly, "I upgraded the perimeter security of this estate following the corporate expansion. I installed micro-lens, continuous-recording optical units with parabolic audio sensors in the limestone cornices of the second-story terrace."

On the massive screen, the video began to play with crystal-clear high-definition fidelity.

The recording showed everything: Vanessa dragging Lily by the arm across the terrace; Vanessa deliberately lifting the child over the balustrade; the clear audio of Vanessa whispering, *“If you tell your father about the bruises, accidents happen”*; and the deliberate release of her hand that sent Lily falling onto the lower roof ledge.

The room went dead silent.

Bradley Croft’s mouth opened slightly. He slowly closed his leather folio, pushed his chair back from the table, and looked down at the floorboards.

Vanessa’s face turned an ugly, mottled crimson. The refined socialite mask shattered completely, revealing the cold, predatory malice beneath.

"You ungrateful bastard," Vanessa hissed, standing up, her fingers clawing at her designer purse. "I gave up my career in D.C. to play nanny to your damaged, pathetic children! Their mother died and left you with two broken brats, and you think you can find anyone better than me?"

"Deputies," Daniel said without shifting his gaze. "Escort Ms. Sterling off the premises. Serve the temporary protection order. If she approaches within five hundred yards of my children, execute the arrest warrant."

Two deputies stepped forward, their hands resting on their utility belts.

Vanessa grabbed her coat, glaring at Daniel with pure hatred as she was escorted down the grand hallway, the heavy front door shutting behind her for the final time.
