Chapter 4: The Severed Ring

The silence that settled over the twelve-thousand-square-foot manor was heavy, echoing, and cold.
Daniel walked into the master bedroom. On the mahogany dresser sat the five-carat diamond engagement ring Vanessa had left behind, catching the cold moonlight.
He picked up the ring, feeling the cold weight of the platinum.
It was a symbol of everything he had done wrong over the past two years: equating status with stability, substituting material luxury for genuine presence, and trusting a stranger because she fit the pedigree of his social circle.
Sarah walked into the room, holding a cup of black coffee. "The legal filings are complete, Daniel. The restraining order is active across Virginia, Maryland, and the District of Columbia. We have also frozen all joint corporate escrow accounts."
"Look at this house, Sarah," Daniel said, looking around the cavernous room with its vaulted ceilings and imported marble. "It’s a mausoleum. It was built to impress investors, not to raise children."
"What are you going to do?"
"Sell it," Daniel replied without a second of hesitation. "Sell every square foot. Liquidate the luxury vehicles, the equestrian stables, the country club shares. I am stepping down as Chief Executive Officer of Vance Enterprises and transitioning to a remote advisory role."
"And where will you take Leo and Lily?"
Daniel walked over to the window, looking out over the dark, sprawling lawn toward the distant mountains.

"To the coast," Daniel said. "To my grandfather's old boatyard in Beaufort. Where the air is clean, the houses are small, and a child can run without standing on the edge of a cliff."
