Chapter 14: The Harbor Lantern

On a warm Saturday evening in July, the wooden dory was officially launched into the calm waters of Taylor’s Creek.

The boat was painted a crisp marine white with a hunter-green sheer strake, bearing the name carved into the transom: *The Resilient*.

Daniel, Claire, Leo, and Lily climbed aboard, the small electric outboard humming silently as they glided through the golden hour light toward the barrier islands of Shackleford Banks.

Wild coastal horses grazed along the sandy dunes, their silhouettes dark against the setting sun.

Lily sat at the bow, wearing a small life jacket, her hair blowing freely in the salt wind, trailing her hand in the cool water, laughing as a pod of bottlenose dolphins surfaced fifty yards from the hull.

Daniel sat at the tiller, his hand resting beside Claire’s.

"You brought us back to life, Claire," Daniel said softly, looking at her with deep, unreserved reverence.

Claire smiled, her eyes crinkling with warmth as she looked at the two children at the bow. "You brought them here, Daniel. You had the courage to walk away from everything that was false to give them what was real. I just helped you hold the lantern."

Leo turned around from the bow, holding up a small brass telescope Daniel had given him. "Look, Dad! The channel marker is clear all the way to the ocean!"

"Then take us home, Captain," Daniel smiled.
