Chapter 5

The afternoon light filtered through the sheer curtains of the apartment, casting a warm glow over the wooden dining table where Julian had spread out a collection of old financial ledgers and legal documents. Martha had brewed a fresh pot of coffee, leaving it quietly on the counter before excusing herself to prepare a light lunch for Elena.
Julian traced his finger along the faded ink of an accounting record dating back nearly twenty years, around the time of his father’s sudden passing. "I always believed my mother inherited the estate and the core assets entirely through my father’s will," he murmured, half to himself. "But looking through these historical trust filings, the numbers do not add up."
Elena sat across from him, resting her hands gently on her rounding belly. "What do you mean, Julian?"
"My father was a cautious businessman, but he was also fair," Julian explained, looking up to meet her eyes. "According to these documents, the primary capital used to build Sterling Enterprises actually came from your grandfather’s manufacturing firm, Elena. Our families were business partners long before my mother engineered the merger of our estates."
Elena frowned, her light brown eyebrows drawing together. "My grandfather? My family lost everything in the market crash just before I was born. My parents always spoke of the Sterlings as patrons who took them in out of charity."
"Charity was never my mother’s strong suit," Julian said grimly. He slid a folded document across the table. "Look at this signature. It is an agreement signed by your grandfather six months before his factory was foreclosed upon and sold to Sterling Enterprises for a fraction of its value. The signature looks hurried, almost forced."
Elena picked up the yellowed paper, her eyes scanning the legal jargon. As the granddaughter of a once-prominent industrialist, she recognized the formal language of corporate restructuring, but something about the document felt deeply wrong. The date coincided with a period when her grandfather had fallen gravely ill, leaving his affairs in the hands of his legal counsel—a firm retained exclusively by Eleanor Sterling.
"She took it all," Elena whispered, the realization dawning slowly. "The factories, the patents, the family name... it was never a partnership. It was a hostile takeover disguised as an act of kindness."
"And she used the same playbook on us," Julian added, leaning back in his chair with a heavy sigh. "She tried to control our lives, our home, and now our child, because she believes everything under the Sterling name belongs solely to her by right of conquest."

The weight of the discovery hung heavily in the room. They were no longer simply fleeing a tyrannical mother; they were uncovering a legacy built on deception. Yet, rather than breaking them down, the truth acted as an anchor, grounding their new life in reality rather than the gilded illusions of the past.
"We need to find the original deeds, Julian," Elena said, her voice carrying a newfound strength. "The ones she was looking for when she attacked me. If those papers prove the assets were stolen from your family and mine, her entire legal control over the estate collapses."
