Chapter 4

The morning sun cast a pale, gentle light across the hardwood floors of a modest, sunlit apartment on the outskirts of the city. It was a stark contrast to the cavernous, opulent halls of the Sterling estate, featuring modest white walls, a comfortable grey sofa, and a small dining table overlooking a quiet, tree-lined street. Julian carried a light box of personal belongings across the threshold, setting it carefully on the floor before turning back to help Elena.
She walked slowly, leaning on his arm for support. The bruises on her face were beginning to fade into a yellowish hue, and though she still moved with care, the heavy fear that had gripped her at the hospital had begun to lift. The movers had already delivered their bedroom set and essential items, transforming the empty space into a sanctuary.
"It is small," Elena said softly, a small, genuine smile touching her lips as she looked around the living room. "Compared to the mansion, it feels almost like a dollhouse."
"It is ours," Julian replied, pulling her gently against his side. He kissed the top of her light brown hair, inhaling the scent of lavender shampoo. "No ancestral portraits watching us from the walls. No unspoken rules. Just us and the baby."
The relocation had been swift and decisive. Julian had spent the previous two days liquidating a portion of his personal investments and renting the apartment under a private lease, ensuring that Eleanor could not easily track their whereabouts through corporate directories. He had also informed the estate attorneys that he was stepping down from his executive duties at Sterling Enterprises until further notice, effectively freezing his mother’s access to the company’s operating accounts.
As Elena settled onto the sofa with a cup of chamomile tea, a gentle knock sounded at the door. Julian tensed, his hand instinctively moving toward the keys in his pocket, half-expecting his mother to have tracked them down. He walked cautiously to the door and pulled it open, revealing Martha standing on the welcome mat. She wore a simple tweed coat instead of her gray maid’s uniform, holding a small canvas tote bag in her hands.
"Martha?" Julian asked, his voice a mix of surprise and caution. "How did you find us?"
"I asked the delivery driver where the address drop was, Mr. Julian," Martha said, her voice steady and respectful. She looked past him, meeting Elena’s gaze with a warm, apologetic smile. "I resigned from the estate yesterday morning, sir. I could not stay in that house a moment longer."
Elena stood up quickly, walking over to the door. "Martha, you didn't have to leave your job. Where will you go?"
May you like
"I have a small cottage of my own, and enough savings to get by," Martha replied, stepping inside as Julian held the door wider. "More importantly, Mrs. Elena, you need someone who knows how to care for you properly right now. If you will have me, I would like to work here as your housekeeper, on my own terms."
Julian looked at Martha, seeing the quiet dignity in her weathered face. The walls of their new life were not built in isolation; they were reinforced by loyalty chosen freely, rather than bought with a salary.
