Chapter 3

Back at the Sterling estate, the grand rooms felt hollow and bitterly cold. Eleanor sat in her high-backed velvet armchair in the parlor, a cup of Earl Grey tea untouched on the mahogany side table. Martha moved silently about the room, her grey uniform blending into the shadows as she collected stray magazines and dusted surfaces that were already spotless. The atmosphere was charged with a tense, oppressive silence that neither woman dared to break.

Eleanor stared into the empty fireplace, her mind racing. She had spent decades building the Sterling empire, managing its finances, and preserving its social standing through sheer force of will. To her, Elena was an interloper—a young woman from a modest background who had captured Julian’s heart and threatened the dynastic purity of the family name. The papers that had been scattered across the hallway were not merely architectural deeds; they were proof of a secret trust Eleanor had established, designed to bypass Julian and secure the estate's legacy entirely under her own control.

"Martha," Eleanor finally spoke, her voice sharp and brittle. "Has my son called from the hospital?"

"No, Madam," Martha replied quietly, pausing with a duster in hand. "Mr. Julian has given strict instructions at the front desk. No calls are being put through from the estate."

Eleanor set her teacup down with a sharp clatter that broke the stillness of the room. "He dares to shut me out? After everything I sacrificed for him? I built this family's reputation from the ground up while his father gambled away our dignity. That girl has poisoned his mind."

"With all due respect, Madam," Martha ventured, stepping forward slightly, her voice trembling slightly with suppressed emotion. "Mrs. Elena is carrying his child. And what happened in the hallway... it went too far. It was not right."

Eleanor’s head whipped around, her eyes narrowing as she glared at the maid. "You forget your place, Martha. You are paid to clean these rooms, not to offer moral judgments. If you wish to join them in exile, the door is unlocked."

Martha lowered her eyes, retreating back into her subservient posture, but the obedience was purely superficial now. The blind loyalty she had maintained toward Eleanor for fifteen years had shattered on the hardwood floor alongside the orange juice glass. She had watched Eleanor terrorize previous staff, control Julian through guilt, and now assault a pregnant woman. The realization settled heavily in Martha’s chest: the grand matriarch of the Sterling estate was no longer a pillar of strength, but a tyrant trapped in her own fading relevance.

As the grandfather clock in the corner struck midnight, Eleanor realized she was entirely alone in the massive house. For the first time in her life, fear crept into her heart—not of losing her son’s affection, but of losing control.
