Chapter 1

The bitter taste of citrus lingered on the polished hardwood floor, mixing with the scent of old paper and rising panic. Elena lay motionless against the scattered documents, her light beige dress stained with the bright orange liquid. Her face bore the fading purple marks of a cruelty that had long hidden behind the grand facade of the Sterling family estate. Just moments before, Eleanor Sterling had aggressively forced the glass of juice into Elena’s mouth, a petty act of domestic tyranny captured in the cruel architecture of the hallway. Martha, the middle-aged maid in her gray uniform, stood paralyzed by the doorway, her hands trembling in her apron pockets as she stared down at the pregnant young woman.

The heavy oak front doors swung inward, breaking the suffocating silence. Julian Sterling stepped across the threshold, his grey double-breasted suit sharp against the dim lighting of the foyer. He carried his leather briefcase in one hand, his posture rigid from a long day at the corporate office. His eyes scanned the chaotic scene before him, moving from the spilled papers to the frail form of his battered wife on the floor.

Eleanor spun around, her styled white hair catching the amber glow of the chandelier. A sharp gasp escaped her lips, her face draining of color as she faced her son. "Julian," she stammered, her voice losing its previous venom, replaced by a sudden, practiced fragility. "You are home early. Thank goodness."

Julian did not answer immediately. He dropped his briefcase, the dull thud echoing through the cavernous hall. His gaze locked onto his mother, reading the guilt written plainly across her features, and then shifted to Martha, who averted her eyes in shame. The silence between them was heavier than any spoken accusation. Julian walked past his mother without a word, dropping to his knees beside Elena. He gently brushed a lock of light brown hair from her bruised forehead, feeling for a pulse beneath her jaw. She was breathing, but shallowly, trapped in the dark abyss of unconsciousness.

"Call an ambulance, Martha," Julian said, his voice terrifyingly calm, devoid of the warmth that usually defined him.

Eleanor stepped forward, her hand reaching out to touch his shoulder in a desperate plea for understanding. "Julian, listen to me. It was an accident. She provoked me. The girl is ungrateful, constantly dropping things, ruining the family records—"

"Quiet, Mother," Julian interrupted, turning his head just enough to meet her eyes. It was a look that froze the older woman in her tracks, a silent vow that the walls of this house would finally crumble.
