Chapter 4 - The Sound of Breaking Glass

The sharp crash of shattering kitchen glass pierced the quiet hum of the refrigerator, freezing Julian in his tracks. The manila folder slipped from his fingers, scattering black-and-white photographs across the hardwood floor. Without a second thought, Julian sprinted down the hallway, his dark jacket flapping behind him as he vaulted over the low coffee table.

"Clara!" he shouted, throwing his weight against the swinging kitchen door.

The scene inside was chaotic. The double-paned window overlooking the backyard garden had been smashed inward, jagged shards of glass glittering on the checkered linoleum. Clara was pressed against the far wall of the pantry entrance, shielding Carter and the toddler with her own body. A thick cloud of evening mist was rolling in through the broken window, carrying the sharp, metallic scent of ozone and wet asphalt.

"Stay back!" Clara screamed, her voice cracking as she held a heavy cast-iron skillet aloft like a club. "They're in the yard!"

Julian scanned the perimeter, his eyes adjusting to the shadows. Through the jagged frame of the broken window, a dark figure could be seen sprinting across the lawn toward the tree line, blending seamlessly into the dense suburban foliage. There was no mistaking the tactical silhouette—the heavy vest, the comms headset glowing with a faint green LED, and the unmistakable stride of a professional operator.

"Did they see the kids?" Julian demanded, stepping past the broken glass and inspecting the window frame. A small piece of dark fabric was snagged on a stray metal point of the latch. He carefully pulled the cloth free, recognizing the synthetic weave immediately. It was the same grade of ballistic nylon used exclusively by Apex Security, the private firm contracted to provide executive protection for the director of his former department.

"No," Clara panted, lowering the skillet slightly as her knees buckled. She slid down the wall until she was sitting on the floor, pulling the children into a tight huddle. "They just threw a brick through the glass. They wanted to send a message. Julian, they aren't going to let us leave this neighborhood alive."

Julian pocketed the scrap of fabric and turned back to his family. The adrenaline was beginning to fade, leaving a cold, heavy dread settling deep into his chest. They couldn't stay here. The house was compromised structurally, digitally, and physically. Every door was a liability, and every window was a target.

"Get them up," Julian commanded quietly, his tone leaving no room for argument. "We’re taking the Subaru. Grab the diaper bag, formula, and whatever cash is in the cookie jar."

"The Subaru?" Clara stared at him in disbelief. "Julian, the main road is three blocks away. If they have the neighborhood under surveillance, we'll be sitting ducks in that car before we even reach the stop sign."

"We aren't taking the main road," Julian replied, walking over to the basement door hidden beneath the basement stairwell landing. He unlatched the heavy brass padlock with a key from his ring. "We’re taking the old drainage culvert tunnel that leads out behind the abandoned railyard. It was built during the cold war. It's too narrow for drones, and it comes out three miles outside the municipal boundary."

Clara stood up, hoisting the toddler onto her hip while taking a firm grip on Carter's small hand. She looked down into the dark, yawning maw of the concrete stairway leading beneath the house, the air rising from it smelling of damp earth and rust.

"How do you even know about that tunnel?" Clara asked, her voice trembling as she looked at her husband with fresh eyes, realizing just how little she truly knew about the man she had married.

Julian pulled a heavy tactical flashlight from the wall mount by the door, flicking it on to reveal a piercing beam of white light cutting through the subterranean dust.

"Because I helped design the expansion maps for this entire district," Julian said grimly, stepping down into the darkness. "Now move. They’re already circling back."
