Chapter 12 - The Dead-Man’s Switch

The absolute silence of the cavernous water treatment plant hung heavily between them, broken only by the rhythmic dripping of stagnant water from the rusted iron trusses above. Director Hayes froze on the metal landing, his eyes narrowing as he stared down at Julian’s hand buried deep inside his dark jacket pocket.

"Don't do anything foolish, Julian," Hayes warned, his smooth demeanor slipping just enough to reveal a sharp edge of panic. "You don't have the leverage you think you do."

"Don't I?" Julian asked, his voice deadpan and steady. He didn't pull his hand out; instead, he kept his fingers curled around a small, modified flash drive wired directly to a satellite transmitter relay. "You assumed Clara found the physical files because you planted the tip in her encrypted email inbox last week. You assumed she would panic and open the safe."

Clara pulled back slightly from Carter, looking up at Julian with wide, terrified eyes. "How did you... how did you know about the email?"

"Because I installed packet sniffers on our home router six months ago when I realized someone was probing our firewall," Julian replied without looking down at her. "I knew someone was leaning on you, Clara. I just didn't want to believe it was you trading our secrets for an exit visa."

Hayes took a step down the metal stairs, his hand hovering over his holster. "It doesn't matter what you sniffed out, Julian. You're standing in an abandoned industrial zone with no cell reception, surrounded by my men. Even if you press whatever button is in that pocket, nothing is going to transmit through these thick concrete and steel walls."

"Normally, you'd be right, Marcus," Julian said, a faint, humorless smile touching the corner of his mouth. "Except I didn't set the server to transmit to the public internet."

Hayes stopped dead on the stairs. "Then where is it pinging?"

"To every active terminal inside the Department of Homeland Security's internal oversight division," Julian said smoothly. "Including the personal inbox of the Attorney General. And it's on a forty-five-second dead-man's switch. Every thirty seconds, I have to press a micro-switch in this pocket to reset the timer. If my thumb relaxes—if you drop me right now, or if your men put a bullet in my chest—the entire archive automatically uploads unencrypted to every federal server in Washington."

Clara gasped, clapping a hand over her mouth. "Julian, no... you'll destroy everything!"

"I'm saving our children from living in a gilded cage built on murder and lies," Julian said softly, locking eyes with his wife.

Up on the landing, Hayes’s face drained of all color. The polished, untouchable bureaucrat was gone, replaced by a desperate man staring down the barrel of total institutional ruin.

"You're bluffing," Hayes spat, though his voice shook slightly. "You wouldn't blow up your own life just to spite us."

"Try me," Julian whispered, his thumb resting firmly on the hidden toggle inside his pocket as the seconds ticked away on his silent mental clock.

Before Hayes could draw his weapon, a sharp, piercing alarm began to wail from somewhere deep beneath the floorboards of the facility.
