Chapter 3 - The Ping on the Screen

The notification banner glared against the dark glass of the smartphone, cutting through the dim ambient light of the living room like a laser. Julian stared down at the glowing text, his mind racing to calculate the geometric impossibility of how fast their security had been breached. The message was short, devoid of punctuation, and utterly chilling.

WE SEE CARTER LOOKING. OPEN THE FRONT DOOR.

Julian’s head snapped toward the shattered entryway, his gaze piercing the gloom of the front porch. The street outside was quiet, bathed in the amber glow of a single municipal streetlight, but the dense line of oak trees bordering their property line offered a hundred places for a sniper or surveillance team to hide. They weren't just compromised; they were currently under direct observation.

"Who sent this?" Clara whispered, her bravado finally crumbling as she stepped closer to Julian, instinctively seeking the safety of his presence despite the violence that had transpired just moments earlier. "Julian, tell me you have a backup plan. Tell me the panic room in the basement actually works."

"There is no panic room, Clara," Julian said, keeping his voice strictly controlled for the sake of the children. "There is only an evacuation protocol, and we missed our window the second you opened that safe."

He reached down and snatched the phone off the floor, his thumb swiping away the notification to check the metadata of the incoming message. It was routed through an encrypted proxy server, bouncing from a relay tower downtown straight to their residential router. Whoever was watching them had full access to their home network, which meant the smart-home cameras, the thermostat, and the baby monitor in the toddler’s room had likely been converted into spying tools weeks ago.

"Daddy, I want to go to my room," little Carter whimpered, burying his face back into Julian’s hip.

Julian crouched down, placing his hands firmly on his son's shoulders. The boy’s light hair was damp with nervous sweat. "Listen to me, Carter. We are going to play a game. You and your sister are going to hold onto Mommy’s hands very tightly, and you are going to walk down the hall into the pantry. You’re going to sit on the bottom shelf behind the canned peaches and you are not going to make a single sound, no matter what you hear. Do you understand?"

"Are the bad men coming?" Carter asked, his lower lip quivering.

"No one is coming," Clara lied smoothly, kneeling beside them and scooping the toddler back into her arms. She looked up at Julian, her eyes communicating a desperate pact. "Just go, Julian. Do what you have to do."

As Clara hurried the children toward the kitchen pantry at the back of the house, Julian stood alone in the center of the living room. He walked over to the console table where the manila folders lay scattered. He opened the top folder, scanning the handwritten ledger entries and black-and-white photographs of the deceased fugitive. The man in the photos wasn't just a random criminal; he was an investigative journalist who had stumbled upon a multi-billion-dollar government embezzlement scheme involving the private defense contractor Julian used to work for.

Julian picked up one of the physical photographs. On the back, written in his own handwriting from three years ago, was a name and a physical address.

A heavy thud echoed from the back of the house, followed immediately by the sound of breaking glass in the kitchen.
