Chapter 6 - The Second Video

The bedroom air grew thick and suffocating as Detective Miller tapped the screen of his department-issued tablet. He turned the device toward Sarah and Ryan, holding it steady between them.

On the screen, another security video played. This one wasn’t from the hallway; it was a wide-angle shot of the home office downstairs, taken just last night at two in the morning. The timestamp was crisp and undeniable.

The video showed Sarah—her exact face, her exact cream-colored button-up shirt, and her blue jeans—standing at the mahogany desk. With practiced, calm movements, she unlocked the bottom drawer, pulled out Helen’s velvet jewelry box, slipped a diamond brooch and several loose stones into her pocket, and then neatly relocked the drawer before walking out of the frame.

Sarah stared at the screen, her breath catching in her throat. Her mind raced in sheer panic.

“That’s... that’s not me,” Sarah whispered, her voice shaking violently as she pointed at the screen. “I was asleep. Ryan, tell him! You know I was in bed!”

Ryan stared at the tablet, his eyes wide with a terrifying mixture of shock and opportunistic realization. He looked from the screen to Sarah, his jaw slightly slack. He didn't speak up. He didn't defend her. Instead, a heavy, cowardly silence settled over him.

“The timestamp matches your phone activity logs, Mrs. Keller,” Detective Miller said evenly, his tone devoid of emotion. “And the facial recognition software matches your biometric data on file. Furthermore, your fingerprints were lifted from the desk surface this morning.”

Helen stepped forward, her posture straightening with triumph. “I told you! I kept quiet because I hoped she would return the items quietly, but she was going to flee! Look at her bag—she’s packed and ready to run!”

Detective Miller glanced over his shoulder at the open duffel bag on the bed, filled to the brim with Sarah’s clothes. The circumstantial evidence stacked against her like a mountain of bricks.

“This is a setup!” Sarah yelled, her voice finally breaking as the terrible machinery of a conspiracy closed in around her. She looked at Ryan, her eyes burning with tears of absolute betrayal. “Ryan, say something! You know I was asleep! You were right there in the bed!”

Ryan swallowed hard, refusing to meet her gaze. He stared down at his shoes, his voice barely a whisper. “I... I was asleep, Sarah. I didn't see when you got out of bed.”

The betrayal hit Sarah harder than any physical blow could have. In that single, cowardly sentence, Ryan had signed her arrest warrant to save his own skin.

Detective Miller stepped closer, pulling a pair of cold steel handcuffs from his belt. “Sarah Keller, you are under arrest for grand larceny and extortion. Turn around and put your hands behind your back.”
