Chapter 11 - The Ambulance Chaser

The silence in the hotel room was absolute. Sarah stared at the screen, watching Ryan’s face twist in genuine, raw panic. The news of Helen’s medical emergency hung in the air like a sudden gust of cold wind.

“Is she... is she alive?” Sarah asked, her voice carrying a conflicted mixture of shock and lingering resentment.

“They took her to Mercy General,” Ryan stammered, wiping a trembling hand across his sweaty forehead. “The officers are here, Sarah. They’re tearing apart the closets, they found the offshore documents Marcus’s firm sent over—I don't know how you got those, but it’s over. My mother is dying, and I’m going to prison. Please, you have to call your brother off. Drop the charges, and I’ll give you everything. I’ll sign whatever you want.”

Marcus leaned into the frame, his shadow falling darkly across the phone screen. His voice was like grinding ice.

“It’s a little late for plea bargains, Ryan,” Marcus stated coldly. “You didn't just frame an innocent woman; you forged legal documents, committed perjury, and executed a calculated financial fraud. The district attorney isn't dropping these charges for all the tea in China.”

Ryan’s eyes widened with pure terror as he recognized Sarah’s brother. “Marcus? No, listen to me, it was my mother’s idea! She forced me to do it! She said if I didn't frame Sarah, she’d disown me and let the loan sharks take my legs! I was just a pawn!”

“A pawn doesn't upload the fake evidence from his own laptop IP address, Keller,” Marcus shot back mercilessly. “We have the forensic logs. We have the wire transfers. Enjoy your hospital vigil, because the moment your mother is stable, the authorities are slapping the cuffs on both of you.”

Before Ryan could scream another plea, Marcus reached out and tapped the screen, severing the connection instantly. The phone went dark, casting a dull reflection of the hotel room ceiling across its polished glass surface.

Sarah sank back into the chair, letting out a long, shuddering breath. The adrenaline that had sustained her through the arrest and the morning’s frantic planning was finally beginning to ebb, leaving behind a profound, bone-deep exhaustion.

“He’s breaking,” Sarah murmured, staring at her hands. “Even now, he’s still blaming everyone else instead of taking responsibility for a single choice he made.”

“Weakness and cowardice always look for a scapegoat,” Marcus said gently, placing a comforting hand on her shoulder. “He made his bed, Sarah. Now he gets to lie in it. But right now, you need to rest. Tomorrow morning, we file the civil suit for defamation, emotional distress, and fraudulent inducement to marriage. We’re going to strip them of every last dime they used to try and destroy you.”
