Chapter 12 - The Hospital Corridor

The fluorescent lights of Mercy General Hospital hummed with sterile indifference. The quiet corridors smelled faintly of antiseptic and old paper as Sarah and Marcus walked side by side toward the cardiac intensive care unit on the third floor.
They hadn't planned on visiting Helen, but Marcus had received a call from the attending physician stating that Helen’s condition had stabilized following a mild stress-induced myocardial infarction, and that she was asking specifically to speak with Sarah before the police officially served her warrant.
As they rounded the corner into the restricted ICU wing, they spotted Ryan sitting alone in the plastic waiting room chairs. He looked like a ghost of the man who had stood defensively in their suburban kitchen just forty-eight hours ago. His light-colored button-up shirt was deeply wrinkled, his hair unwashed and sticking out in wild tufts.
When he looked up and saw Sarah and Marcus approaching, he shrank back, his shoulders slumping in total defeat. He didn't stand up; he didn't try to argue.
“She’s... she’s in room 312,” Ryan whispered, his voice cracked and hollow. He didn't look Sarah in the eye, staring instead at the scuffed linoleum floor between his dusty shoes. “The doctor said the stress of the police raid and the financial audit pushed her over the edge. Her heart just couldn't take it.”
“And where are the police?” Marcus asked, his tone hard and uncompromising.
“Down at the nurses’ station,” Ryan replied weakly. “They’re waiting for visiting hours to end so they can formally arrest us both. They found the second stash of jewelry in my mother’s private safe downstairs. The whole thing... it’s completely over.”
Sarah looked down at her estranged husband. She didn't feel triumph anymore; she only felt a profound, hollow sadness for how thoroughly greed and deceit could hollow out a human life.
“You could have stopped this at any time, Ryan,” Sarah said quietly. “All you had to do was tell the truth.”
Ryan finally lifted his head, his bloodshot eyes swimming with unshed tears. “I was a coward, Sarah. I was terrified of losing the lifestyle, terrified of my mother, terrified of being nothing. And now... I’ve lost everything anyway.”

“Go see your mother,” Sarah said simply, turning away toward room 312. “The police will be here soon enough.”
