Chapter 5 - An Unwelcome Arrival

The heavy thud of the front door swinging open sent a sudden, chilling draft up the staircase. Sarah and Ryan froze, exchanging a tense, questioning glance. The bitter shouting match between Ryan and Helen downstairs had abruptly cut off, replaced by an eerie, heavy silence.

“Did you invite someone over?” Sarah asked, her hand resting on the zipper of her duffel bag.

Ryan shook his head frantically, his face pale. “No. Mom said she canceled the cleaning service for the week. Nobody else has keys.”

Heavy, purposeful footsteps began to climb the stairs. They didn’t sound like Helen’s shuffling gait, nor did they carry the hesitant weight of a delivery person. These footsteps were firm, rhythmic, and entirely uninvited.

Ryan moved instinctively toward the bedroom door, pulling it half-shut just as a tall, imposing figure rounded the corner of the landing.

It was Detective Miller. Sarah recognized him instantly from the local precinct—a man with sharp eyes, a perpetually tired expression, and a dark trench coat that smelled faintly of rain. He didn't bother knocking; he simply pushed the door the rest of the way open, his stern gaze locking onto Ryan before shifting to Sarah.

“Ryan Keller?” the detective asked, his voice gravelly and authoritative. “And Sarah Keller?”

Ryan swallowed hard, his hands trembling as he gripped the edge of the door. “Yes? Can I help you, Detective? What is this about?”

Detective Miller pulled a folded sheet of official paperwork from his inner pocket, unfolding it with deliberate slowness. “We received an anonymous tip less than ten minutes ago, accompanied by digital evidence of a robbery involving a high-value antique diamond brooch reported missing from this residence.”

Helen appeared behind the detective in the hallway, her face twisted into a mask of calculated grief and righteous indignation. She wasn't shouting anymore; instead, she dabbed at her dry eyes with a tissue, playing the part of the frail, victimized matriarch to absolute perfection.

“I tried to protect him, Officer,” Helen wailed softly, her voice trembling with manufactured sorrow. “I didn’t want to believe my own son could steal from me, but the evidence is right there. And... and she helped him plan it. They were both in on it together.”

Sarah let out a sharp, incredulous laugh, stepping forward into the amber light. “Are you out of your mind, Helen? You were screaming that I stole your jewelry just twenty minutes ago!”

“Because you had the motive!” Helen snapped, dropping the crying act instantly as her venom returned full force. “You were drowning in credit card debt!”

Detective Miller raised a hand, cutting off the escalating argument with a single, sharp gesture. He looked directly at Sarah, his eyes unreadable. “Mrs. Keller, before you say another word, I need you to look at this second piece of evidence we just received.”
