Chapter 6 - The Transfer of Power

The morning sun filtered through the floor-to-ceiling glass windows of the executive suite on the forty-second floor, casting long, geometric shadows across the polished walnut floor. Claire stood before the expansive view, her dark hair still meticulously gathered in a sleek updo, though she had shed the beige sleeveless dress for a sharp, charcoal-gray tailored pantsuit that commanded absolute authority.

On the massive mahogany desk behind her sat the vintage brass key Arthur Vance had given her, resting beside the black smartphone and the federal compliance clipboard.

A soft chime sounded at the private elevator doors. Arthur Vance stepped out, leaning on his cane, accompanied by three senior members of the board of directors. Their expressions were a mixture of exhaustion and cautious relief as they looked around the newly organized office.

“The federal prosecutor’s office just confirmed the temporary asset freeze has been lifted for operational accounts,” Arthur announced, walking slowly toward the desk. He stopped and looked at Claire, a respectful nod of acknowledgment softening his aged features. “ Payroll is secured. The warehouse workers received their back pay this morning, along with a formal apology from the board.”

Claire turned around slowly, resting her hands on the back of the executive leather chair.

“And the investigation into Julian’s private network?” Claire asked calmly.

“Ongoing,” one of the board members chimed in, stepping forward. “The SEC is expanding its scope to include every shell company he registered over the past five years. They believe several other regional executives were involved, though they haven’t found direct paper trails for them yet.”

Claire’s eyes remained steady and unreadable. She reached out and picked up a slim flash drive resting beside the brass key.

“They won’t find paper trails if they only look at bank statements,” Claire said evenly. She extended the flash drive toward the board member. “Julian didn’t use traditional banking channels for his secondary bribes. He used encrypted decentralized currency ledgers disguised as software licensing fees.”

The board member stared at the small piece of plastic in utter astonishment, taking it delicately as if it were fragile glass.

“Where did you get this?” Arthur asked, genuinely shocked.

“From the secondary partition of Julian’s personal workstation,” Claire replied smoothly. “He thought he deleted it the night before he proposed to Elena. But he made a critical error in his backup protocol. He routed the automatic cloud sync through my assistant terminal so he could monitor my activity without realizing I had reverse-engineered his access permissions two years ago.”

Arthur let out a low whistle of disbelief, shaking his head.

“You’ve been steps ahead of him the entire time, haven’t you?”

“When you spend five years watching someone systematically dismantle a company from the inside while pretending to be a visionary leader, you learn to anticipate every move they make,” Claire said quietly. She walked around the desk, picked up the brass key, and held it out toward Arthur. “The office is secured, Mr. Vance. My resignation as executive assistant is effective immediately.”

Arthur looked at the brass key in her palm, then looked up into her unwavering gaze. He did not take the key. Instead, he gently pushed her hand back toward her.

“The board has already voted unanimously, Claire,” Arthur said, his voice ringing with absolute finality. “Effective nine o’clock this morning, you are the new Chief Executive Officer of Vance Global.”

Silence fell over the suite as the board members nodded in unison, waiting for her response. Claire looked down at the key, feeling the cold metal press against her skin.

Before she could speak, her black smartphone buzzed on the desk. She glanced at the screen, and the color drained slightly from her face as she read the name of the incoming caller: a restricted federal wire protocol originating directly from Elena’s defense attorney.
