Chapter 11 - The Sudden Collapse

The ink from the Montblanc pen hovered just above the signature line of the Swiss banking repatriation document as the words on Claire’s phone screen burned into her consciousness: “Inmate Julian Vance has collapsed during transport and is currently unresponsive.”
The silence in the executive boardroom became absolute. Arthur Vance leaned forward, his weathered hands gripping the edge of the mahogany desk so tightly his knuckles turned white. He had seen the shift in Claire’s expression, a micro-expression of sudden, unexpected shock that she quickly reined in behind her habitual composure.
“Claire?” Arthur asked, his voice cracking with sudden dread. “What is it? Is it the Swiss transfer?”
Claire slowly lowered the pen, capping it with a deliberate, metallic click. She looked up, her dark eyes steady, though her breathing was perceptibly shallower than it had been moments before.
“The transfer is approved,” Claire said, her voice calm despite the turbulence of the news. She slid the document toward the Swiss courier, who nodded respectfully, gathered the remaining papers into his leather briefcase, and turned toward the private elevator without a word.
Once the elevator doors closed behind the courier, Arthur stepped closer to the desk.
“That wasn't about the Swiss accounts, Claire,” the old man insisted, his voice dropping into a gravelly whisper. “I know that look. What happened?”
Claire picked up the black smartphone, turning the screen off before slipping it back into the pocket of her charcoal-gray pantsuit.
“Julian collapsed during transport from the holding facility to the federal medical center,” Claire stated plainly, her tone devoid of emotional inflection.
Arthur staggered backward, catching himself against the edge of the leather chair. He stared at Claire in stunned disbelief.
“Collapsed? Is he… is he dead?” Arthur asked, the realization of his nephew’s mortality crashing down upon him despite all the betrayal and fraud.
“The medical transport team hasn't released a definitive status report yet,” Claire replied, walking calmly toward the floor-to-ceiling windows to look out over the city skyline. The gray afternoon clouds were rolling in, casting a heavy, melancholic pallor across the corporate district. “They suspect a severe stress-induced cardiac event. His lifestyle, combined with the sudden collapse of his entire financial empire, created a level of pressure his system simply couldn't sustain.”
“My God,” Arthur muttered, burying his face in his trembling hands. “For all his arrogance, for all the crimes he committed against this company… he was still my brother’s son.”
Claire did not turn around immediately. She watched the distant traffic crawling along the wet asphalt far below, remembering the man who had stood beside her in this very office just twenty-four hours ago, smiling proudly while flashing a stolen diamond ring to an applauding crowd. The contrast between that moment of fragile arrogance and the cold reality of a prison transport vehicle was staggering.
“Greed builds very tall towers, Mr. Vance,” Claire said softly, her voice barely audible over the hum of the office ventilation system. “But it lays very shallow foundations.”
“What do we do now?” Arthur asked, looking up, his eyes glassy with unshed tears. “The media is going to have a field day with this. If Julian dies in custody while under federal investigation for corporate embezzlement, the public scandal will dwarf the financial losses.”

“We control the narrative,” Claire said, turning around to face him with absolute resolve. She walked back to the desk, picking up her phone once more. “We release a formal statement through the corporate communications department confirm
