Chapter 2 - The Sound of Closing Doors

The federal seal gleaming on the clipboard felt heavier than lead, anchoring Julian to the polished mahogany floor of the corporate lounge. He stared at the blue watermark of the Department of Justice, his mind desperately calculating escape routes that no longer existed. Five years of meticulous fraud, hidden behind layers of offshore shell companies and falsified quarterly reports, had just unraveled in less than twelve seconds.

Beside him, Elena let out a sharp, breathless laugh, though her eyes remained wide with terror. She grabbed Julian’s arm, her artificial nails digging through the fine wool of his dark blue suit.

“He’s bluffing, Julian! Tell me he’s bluffing!” Elena hissed, her voice rising in panic as the gathered colleagues began backing away toward the elevators, desperate to distance themselves from the unfolding scandal.

“Shut up, Elena,” Julian muttered through clenched teeth, his face draining of all color. He looked up at Claire, whose beige sleeveless dress and sleek updo seemed to absorb the harsh fluorescent light of the room. There was no anger in Claire’s expression, only a profound, terrifying emptiness. That stillness unnerved Julian more than any shouting match could have.

“You can’t just lock everything, Claire,” Julian pleaded, dropping his voice into a softer, almost conspiratorial tone. He stepped closer to her, ignoring the clipboard. “We built this division together. Remember the Apex merger? I covered for you when the SEC came sniffing around two years ago. We are partners in this.”

Claire did not step back. She tilted her head slightly, her dark eyes narrowing.

“Partners?” Claire repeated softly. “You called me an assistant on paper just a minute ago, Julian. And as for the Apex merger, I have the exact flash drive containing your personal signature on the forged compliance documents right here in my pocket.”

Elena gasped, letting go of Julian’s arm as if touching a live wire. She staggered backward, colliding with the round mahogany table. The black smartphone and the clipboard rattled against the wood.

“You kept records?” Elena whispered, horror dawning on her features. “You were planning this all along?”

“I was doing my job,” Claire replied steadily. “Until I found the unauthorized wire transfer routing twenty million dollars of employee pension funds into a personal diamond syndicate account registered under your name, Elena.”

Before Elena could formulate a defense, the heavy double doors of the private elevator bank chimed loudly. The polished brass doors slid open with a mechanical hiss, revealing two men in dark federal windbreakers and local police officers holding heavy containment gear.

The lead agent stepped forward, his badge flashing sharply in the ambient light.

“Julian Vance and Elena Rostova?” the agent called out, his voice echoing off the glass walls. “You are both under arrest for federal wire fraud, embezzlement, and conspiracy.”

Julian froze, his hand still hovering over the mahogany table. He looked from the federal agents back to Claire, who calmly reached down, picked up the clipboard, and handed it directly to the lead investigator.

“The primary evidence, along with the encrypted hard drives, is on the table,” Claire said clearly.
