Chapter 10 - The Overseas Wire

The sharp click of the federal handcuffs securing Victor Thorne echoed off the polished walnut panels of the executive hallway, sealing the fate of the man who had tried to orchestrate Vance Global’s destruction from the shadows. As the marshals guided Thorne toward the private elevator, his phone continued to buzz insistently against his chest, its glowing screen casting brief, erratic flashes of light through the fabric of his tailored suit.
Claire watched them leave without a word of triumph. Her expression remained a mask of disciplined restraint. She turned back toward the boardroom, where Arthur Vance and the remaining board members stood in stunned silence, trying to process the rapid succession of events that had dismantled a multi-million-dollar conspiracy in less than twenty-four hours.
“He’s gone,” Arthur whispered, lowering himself back into his chair with a heavy sigh that seemed to lift decades of exhaustion from his shoulders. He looked up at Claire, his eyes filled with profound respect. “You dismantled a hostile takeover that had been planning its strike for over three years, Claire. I don’t even know how to begin thanking you.”
“You don’t have to thank me, Mr. Vance,” Claire replied, walking calmly to her desk and picking up the black smartphone. “We still have one critical loose end to tie up.”
“Elena,” Arthur noted, his expression hardening. “Her lawyer called back ten minutes ago demanding a settlement meeting.”
“There will be no settlement meeting,” Claire stated firmly. She tapped the screen, bringing up the financial audit log of Elena’s personal trust accounts. “Elena chose to use stolen pension funds to finance her lifestyle, believing her father’s influence would shield her from federal consequences. She miscalculated.”
Before Arthur could reply, the boardroom’s secure intercom system chimed softly. The voice of the ground-floor security director crackled through the speaker.
“Ms. Sterling? You have an urgent visitor at the security gate. A courier representing an international banking entity in Zurich. He insists on delivering a physical ledger directly to your office.”
Claire exchanged a brief, calculating glance with Arthur.
“Send him up, security protocol four-dash-zero,” Claire instructed clearly.
Ten minutes later, the private elevator doors opened again. This time, the visitor was not a federal marshal or a corporate executive, but a severe-looking man in a dark trench coat holding a heavy leather-bound briefcase with a Swiss banking insignia embossed in gold leaf.
The courier walked straight toward the executive desk, stopping a respectful distance away. Without a word, he placed the briefcase on the mahogany wood and popped the brass combination latches.
Inside lay a single, meticulously printed financial ledger, alongside a stack of international wire transfer receipts bearing signatures that made Arthur Vance gasp aloud.
“What is this?” Arthur asked, standing up and leaning over the desk.
“This,” Claire said, lifting the top document and reading the headers, “is the complete registry of the offshore accounts Julian and Elena opened in Zurich under fictitious corporate names. And look at the primary beneficiary listed on page four.”
Arthur squinted at the dense legal text. His breath hitched in his throat.
“Elena’s mother,” Arthur read in disbelief. “Her family wasn’t just connected to the fraud—they were holding the primary offshore reserve.”
The Swiss courier gave a polite, formal nod.
“The Swiss Federal Banking Commission has authorized the immediate freezing of all assets associated with these accounts, effective immediately,” the courier spoke in heavily accented, precise English. He pushed a final document toward Claire. “We require your signature as the legally recognized CEO of Vance Global to complete the repatriation of the funds.”
Claire picked up a heavy Montblanc fountain pen resting on the desk. She looked down at the signature line, her hand steady and unwavering.
As the nib touched the paper, her black smartphone vibrated violently on the desk. She paused, glancing down at the screen.

The incoming notification was an urgent flash alert from the federal prison medical facility, displaying a single, chilling sentence: “Inmate Julian Vance has collapsed during transport and is currently unresponsive.”
