Chapter 8 - The Diamond Tracker

Lady Margaret instinctively dropped her hand away from her wrist, her fingers twitching as if she had just touched a hot iron stove. The heavy diamond bracelet encrusted around her thin wrist did indeed feature a tiny, almost imperceptible blinking crimson light embedded inside the platinum clasp—a micro-transponder that had just activated on a secure frequency monitored by federal investigators.

Margaret took an involuntary step backward, her silk gown rustling sharply against the marble floor. "What... what is this nonsense? Turn it off!"

"You can't turn off a federal evidence beacon, Margaret," Eleanor said, her voice as cold as glacier water. "That bracelet wasn't a gift from Arthur’s legitimate business earnings. It was purchased directly using embezzled pension funds from the workers' relief trust—the very same trust you and Arthur looted to buy your Manhattan penthouse."

Margaret’s chest heaved rapidly beneath the intricate lacework of her silver gown. She looked around the boardroom, realizing that the trap had been sprung with absolute, surgical precision. There was no escape route, no high-priced lawyer coming to rescue her, and no politician willing to answer her phone calls now that her assets had been frozen by a federal injunction.

"You planned this," Margaret hissed, her voice dropping to a venomous whisper as she pointed a manicured, trembling finger straight at Eleanor. "You staged the whole confrontation at the ballroom last night. You used this stupid, worthless waitress as bait!"

Chloe stepped forward, her jaw tightening. "I wasn't bait. I was just doing my job."

"Your job is serving coffee and cleaning up after your betters!" Margaret shrieked, finally losing the last shreds of her aristocratic composure. Her face contorted in an ugly mask of pure class hatred. "You're a nobody! A peasant living in a tenement building! You think putting on a borrowed blazer makes you one of us? You'll always be just a servant!"

Before Eleanor could issue a rebuke, the lead federal agent stepped out from the shadows near the corner, his hand resting casually on his handcuffs holster.

"Lady Margaret Vance," the agent announced, his voice booming across the silent boardroom. "You are under arrest for money laundering, conspiracy, and wire fraud."

Two officers moved in swiftly, grabbing Margaret by her frail arms. The proud socialite let out a sudden, piercing shriek of absolute fury as the cold steel cuffs snapped onto her wrists, tearing the delicate lace of her expensive gown.

"Don't touch me! Do you know who I am?" Margaret screamed, thrashing against the officers as they dragged her toward the private elevator. "I will ruin every single one of you! Eleanor, you ungrateful witch, you'll pay for this!"

The elevator doors slid shut, cutting off her shrill screams and plunging the executive boardroom back into an eerie, suffocating quiet.

Eleanor let out a long, shuddering breath, leaning back against her wheelchair as if a mountain had finally been lifted from her shoulders. She looked up at Chloe, whose hands were still trembling slightly.

"I am sorry you had to witness such ugliness, child," Eleanor said softly. "Power often reveals the absolute worst in people."

Chloe looked down at her hands, then toward the empty elevator doors where the masters of the corporate world had just been brought down by their own greed. "They really thought they were untouchable."

May you like

"They did," Eleanor agreed, her eyes turning toward the panoramic city view outside the glass. "And that was their fatal mistake. But our work is only just beginning, Chloe. There is a document in Arthur’s private safe that you need to read right now."
